Video registration of the presentation "The UK Exascale Project" by Mark Parsons at the HPC User Forum in Edinburgh

4 Nov 2019 Edinburgh - Mark Parsons explained "The UK Exascale Project" at the HPC User Forum in Edinburgh. In the video recording of his presentation you can hear about the development of this project and the current status. Since mid 2018, it was clear that the UK needed an exascale computing strategy. Because of Brexit, it was impossible for the UK to join EuroHPC. So, a strategic case was made to undertake a scoping study to develop an outline business case for the UK government.

Four key questions needed to be answered. Do we need an Exascale capability in the UK? What will an Exascale supercomputer look like? What will it cost and how will it be funded? How will it be hosted?

To reach exaflop performance, about 4-5 million cores are needed. Exaflop power requirements range from 20MW to 160MW and the physical size of the system will be between 60 to over 800 cabinets.

The exascale system could be hosted at the - upgraded - Advanced Computing Facility in Edinburgh. It will use 100% renewable energy.

We also published an in-depth interview with Mark Parsons called " Interview with EPCC's Mark Parsons - plan for UK exascale supercomputer in 2022/2023 is taking shape ".
