Some examples involve the following:
Simulation of turbulent flows is a theme that comes back in many PRACE Success Stories, and this is because such flows can be found in very diverse situations - from the turbulence around airplane wings to the sinking salt fingers in the oceans - and need a lot of computational power to be modelled in sufficient detail. On pages 6 and 7 you will find another such HPC project revolving around turbulent flows.
Astrophysics is another domain that asks for a continuous stream of large allocations of the most powerful HPC resources, and considering the vastness of the universe and the variety of phenomena in it, there are always more questions to explore, and more answers to be found. On pages 14 and 15, Peter Hauschildt explains how he and his team are preparing their code in 3D, to be able to use the next level of systems when those become available.
Looking at the above examples, HPC seems to be far removed from our day-to-day lives, but PRACE encourages interested parties to read the article on pages 18 and 19, and find out how close it actually can get: molecular dynamics simulations can help us understand how the presence or absence of water influences the effectiveness of drugs. Imagine how a full understanding of the complex interactions of water molecules with the drug itself and the protein it binds to, could lead to much more efficient treatment of diseases.
