EGI opens new training infrastructure

25 Sep 2015 Amsterdam - EGI has established a Cloud-based e-infrastructure for training, under the coordination of the SA2.1 task of the EGI-Engage project. The training infrastructure is hosted as a dedicated resource pool - training.egi.eu, a Virtual Organisation (VO), on the EGI Federated Cloud infrastructure. The infrastructure provides resources and services for face-to-face events, online training courses (Webinars, MOOCs) or self-paced learning modules. The training VO is integrated with the 'per-user proxy factory' solution of EGI to generate personal, but short-living proxy certificates in an easy way, for trainers and trainees.

"The infrastructure is built from different types of IaaS clouds in a federated way based on open standards and EGI technologies", stated Gergely Sipos, EGI.eu Technical Outreach Manager. "This allows us to support a very broad spectrum of training cases: Cloud-oriented courses, custom software courses, single-site scenarios, multi-site infrastructure usage, technology-specific courses, open standard based site access."

The training infrastructure will be used for:

  • Exercises to demonstrate services of the EGI Federated Cloud, typically targeted at programmers or other technical members of scientific communities or projects.
  • Courses about scientific software and science-specific services, where trainers can deploy their own Virtual Machine images as training environment for the students. Because of the Cloud-based operational model the students can have dedicated training environments, and the community can benefit from the easy deployment, predictability and repeatability of courses.

The infrastructure will be used for the Tutorials at the EGI Community Forum in Bari, 10-12 November 2015.
