Sanzio Bassini took the audience through the history of PRACE, underlining the exponential growth of HPC usage in science and industry in Europe. For example, under the 9th PRACE Call for Proposals for Project Access, 9 projects related to health are allocated over 200 million core hours out of a total of 1.2 thousand million core hours (16%). This indicates how large a share of European HPC resources is used by Life Sciences and related fields.
He also outlined the PRACE strategy for 2015-2020, named "PRACE 2.0", which is based on four key-principles:
Part of this strategy will be the creation and strengthening of links between PRACE and Centres of Excellence, FP7 Flagship Initiatives such as Graphene and the Human Brain Project, and international co-operation.
