Prof. Marquardt opened an Energy Workshop at ORNL on the project "High Temperature and Engergy Materials", which is funded by the BMBF. This project started in the Summer of 2013 with ORNL as co-operation partner and is funded with about 600.000 euro per year for three years. The goal is to make significant scientific contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improve the sustainability of energy supply primarily in Germany and the USA as well as to network research skills at the Research Centre Jülich and the ORNL. The research centre is represented with a branch office at ORNL, where it operates a neutron spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source.
At the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Prof. Marquardt exchanged experiences with Prof. Horst Simon, deputy director at LBNL and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Research Center, on joint projects in the field of HPC, energy technologies, materials science and neurosurgery. In addition, the Jülich delegation visited the IBM Almaden Research Center and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC).
