AMS-IX exceeds 10 Tb/s of connected capacity

22 Oct 2013 Amsterdam - AMS-IX, the Amsterdam Internet Exchange, has exceeded the 10 Terabit per second (Tb/s) of connected capacity. AMS-IX is the world's first Internet exchange offering this amount of connected capacity.

One of the reasons that AMS-IX has crossed the 10 Tb/s of connected capacity is the increase in number of connected IP networks. This year, 85 new networks have already been added to the exchange. This is more than the total number of new connected parties in 2012.

What also contributed to reaching this level of capacity is the take up of 100GE ports. So far, fifteen 100GE ports are enabled at AMS-IX. As a result of the 50% price drop for the 100GE ports in July of this year, AMS-IX expects that more parties will follow soon.

AMS-IX also exceeded the 2,5 Tb/s of peak Internet traffic on 22nd of October.

The strong growth in Internet video traffic is one of the factors that contributed to this increase in Internet traffic on the platform of the exchange. Other factors are the growth in connected networks at AMS-IX and a higher number of smartphone users in the Netherlands and abroad.
