Vertica announces Community Edition version of Vertica Analytic Database

18 Oct 2011 Billerica - Vertica, an HP company and provider of real-time analytics platforms, has launched the Vertica Community Edition, a free version of its Vertica Analytic Database software.

Scheduled for availability toward the end of the year, the Vertica Community Edition provides much of the functionality of the enterprise-level Vertica Analytics Platform, allowing a broader base of users to leverage Vertica software, especially for academic and research initiatives. In addition, Community Edition users will have access to a new Vertica Community portal that offers a variety of tools, tips and resources to assist diverse users with their data analysis needs, as well as a platform to showcase Vertica partners and their community contributions.

"I love the idea of a free Vertica edition", stated Curt Monash, president of Monash Research and editor of DBMS2.com. "It should smooth the path for businesses and academics alike to experience faster and hopefully better analytics."

Vertica Community Edition software is based on the Vertica Analytics Platform, offering the simplicity, advanced analytics, automatic design and familiar interface of the enterprise edition. Community Edition users will be able to run on industry-standard hardware, virtual machines or the Cloud and can seamlessly upgrade to the Enterprise Edition. As a no-cost offering, the Vertica Community Edition software will be limited to 1 terabyte of raw data, a three-node cluster size and Community Support only.

"People who try Vertica quickly realize how easy it is to install, set up and begin using, which ultimately leads to long-term customers and partnerships", stated Christopher Lynch, vice president and general manager, Vertica, an HP Company. "The Vertica Community Edition will enable us to deliver this initial experience without friction or obligation to the masses, while also giving back to the community."

As part of the development of the Vertica Community Edition, Vertica is revamping its myVertica Community Portal to include more resources and community features for all of Vertica's users, including Community Edition users, evaluation users and customers. The new myVertica Community portal, which will be available when the Vertica Community Edition beta software is released, will offer a community forum, knowledge base and documentation. In addition, the portal will offer software and third-party plug-ins for data loading, visualization, reporting and other ecosystem solutions, such as Hadoop and Pig.

"We believe that databases should work at the speed of thought of the people accessing them, so we are excited about the synergies created by offering our Tableau data visualization software to users of the Vertica Community Edition", stated Dan Jewett, vice president, Product Management, Tableau Software. "The tight integration of Vertica and Tableau opens up a new era of democratizing data, helping drive the adoption of next-generation products for analyzing and visualizing Big Data for today's speed-thirsty organisations."

"Since its inception Talend has been leading the democratization of enterprise solutions, bringing integration to enterprises of all sizes, so we are proud to empower the Big Data generation by integrating our technology with the Vertica Community Edition", stated Fabrice Bonan, chief operating officer and co-founder, Talend. "We view this initiative as a powerful new solution for individuals and companies of all sizes to familiarize themselves with some of the most powerful tools for loading and analyzing Big Data on the market today."

The beta programme will be limited, but the full availability of the Vertica Community Edition is expected before the end of the year.
