Mexico launches HPC initiative for Energy Research and Development supported by BSC

14 Sep 2017 Mexico City - Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has participated in the Mexican International Renewable Energy Conference (MEXIREC) on September 12th in Mexico City. MEXIREC has been organized by the Government of Mexico, within the framework of the Strategic Dialogues on the Future of Energy (DEMEX).

This event has started with a speech of the BSC Engineering Department (CASE) Director, José María Cela, talking about the relevance of supercomputing in energy industry. Afterwards, Jeff Roberts from HPC4MFG, Horst Simon from NERSC, David Skinner from NERSC and the BSC Director Mateo Valero have been discussing about supercomputing for energy industry and its strategies at the Panel of Experts.

Finally, Mateo Valero and Ulises Cortés from BSC and Carlos Ortiz and Jorge Márquez from Mexican Secretariat of Energy (Sener) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for promoting a Mexican Supercomputing Center for Energy (CENSCE).

The Mexican Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute - Cinvestav, according to its initials in Spanish - has also awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Mateo Valero, Director of Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

The ceremony took place at 12pm on 11 September in the Auditorio Arturo Rosenblueth, Mexico City. The honorary doctorate was presented by Dr. Pablo Rudomín Zevnovaty, Professor Emeritus of the Physiology, Biophysics and Neuroscience Department at Cinvestav, who had nominated Dr. Valero for the academic award. The doctorate was awarded in recognition of Dr. Valero's excellent work in all aspects of supercomputing development and research, in particular his collaboration in driving forward supercomputing in Mexico.

Cinvestav Director José Mustre de Léon was also at the event, which ended with Dr. Valero's keynote speech, titled "From Classical to Runtime Aware Computer Architectures".
