Sensor Cloud network - a new infrastructure for clever applications

16 Sep 2013 Almere - Sensor Clouds are a new concept that is developing very quickly. Different sensors in a geographical area can be combined into a Sensor Cloud to give detailed information and to provide specific services. Primeur Magazine had a chance to talk in a video interview to Antonio Puliafito from the University of Messina, after his presentation on sensor Clouds at the Cloud Summerschool 2013 in Almere. Antonio Puliafito is a full professor of computer engineering at the University of Messina, Italy. His interests include parallel and distributed systems, networking, wireless, Grid and Cloud computing. He is involved in research on advanced analytical modelling techniques.

A sensor is an abstraction or an entity that is able to provide information according to the specific requirements of the user. The sensor infrastructure has to be aggregated and combined with a more traditional computing infrastructure in order to store and elaborate the Big Data provided by the sensor network.

One of the applications is CLEVER mobile crowd-sensing. The CLEVER application provides access to mobile phones of citizens. Sensors in this way are able to detect holes in the streets. This information is used by the public administration to improve the speed of repair works.

Currently, Antonio Puliafito is involved in two projects. The first one is called SIMONE . SIMONE is a sensor network that provides information about energy production and the usage of alternative energy sources such as solar power and windmills.

The second project is called SIGMA. The SIGMA project intends to develop Cloud solutions to manage environmental multi-risk critical situations.
