Cray supercomputers now available with the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 V2 product family

10 Sep 2013 Seattle - The Cray XC30 series of supercomputers and the Cray CS300 line of cluster supercomputers are now available with the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family, formerly code named "Ivy Bridge". With additional cores per processor, improved energy efficiency and greater performance, the new Intel Xeon processors will be featured across the complete line of Cray XC30 and Cray CS300 products, including both air and liquid cooled models.

"Designing and building innovative, reliable and scalable supercomputing systems - that are also flexible - lies at the heart of our Adaptive Supercomputing vision, and adding the new Intel Xeon processors to our systems is another exciting step in that evolution", stated Peg Williams, Cray's senior vice president of high performance computing systems. "It is important that we offer our customers a choice of supercomputing solutions that best meet the needs of their applications, and we believe the new Intel Xeon processors will add important new benefits and features to an already compelling line of Cray products."

"The new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family is optimized for an extremely diverse set of workloads that are representative of what drives the world's leading high performance computing facilities", stated Shannon Poulin, vice president of Intel's Datacenter and Connected Systems Group and general manager of the Datacenter Marketing Group. "The Cray XC30 supercomputers and Cray CS300 line of cluster systems feature highly innovative supercomputing technologies. The combination of Cray systems and Intel processors will provide researchers and engineers across various scientific fields with powerful computational tools for solving grand challenges."

Previously code-named "Cascade", the Cray XC30 supercomputers are Cray's most advanced HPC systems and are engineered to meet the performance challenges of HPC users. The Cray XC30 and Cray XC30-AC supercomputers feature the Aries system interconnect; a Dragonfly network topology that frees applications from locality constraints; innovative cooling systems to lower customers' total cost of ownership; the next-generation of the scalable, high performance Cray Linux Environment supporting a wide range of ISV applications; Cray's HPC optimized programming environment; and the ability to handle a wide variety of processor types, including Intel Xeon processors, Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors, and NVIDIA Tesla GPU accelerators.

The Cray CS300 series of cluster supercomputers are scalable cluster solutions that group optimized, industry-standard building block server platforms into a unified, fully-integrated system. Available with air or liquid-cooled architectures, the Cray CS300 systems provide superior price/performance, energy efficiency and configuration flexibility. The systems are integrated with Cray's HPC software stack and include software tools compatible with most open source and commercial compilers, schedulers, and libraries. The Cray CS300 systems also feature the Cray Advanced Cluster Engine, an essential management software suite designed to provide network, server, cluster and storage management capabilities that are necessary to run large, complex technical applications.
