OLCF outreach projects garner awards

27 May 2015 Oak Ridge - Two outreach efforts of the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), a US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility, have been recognized for excellence and quality. The 2013-14 OLCF Annual Report was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the American Inhouse Design Awards competition, the original and largest awards programme for exceptional projects created by in-house designers. The programme recognizes the unique value in-house designers offer to their employers. Out of nearly 6,000 entries, just 15 percent received a Certificate of Excellence.

The cover of the 2013-14 OLCF Annual Report featured a visualization produced by Dave Pugmire of DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The image represented the work of Princeton professor Jeroen Tromp and his team; they used Titan to map the interior of the globe to a depth of 2,900 kilometers to help reveal the Earth's inner workings. The report design was produced by ORNL's Jason Smith.

The Outreach team also received an Award of Quality in the 40th Annual V Awards competition conducted by the Volunteer Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). OLCF entered the Summit roll-out in the Integrated Communications category. The entry, "Summit: Scale New Heights. Discover New Solutions", highlighted the comprehensive communications plan, including a website, news release, fact sheet, and video.

The V Awards represent the best public relations programmes and products of East Tennessee professionals as judged by a peer chapter through PRSA. Winners were recognized at the V Awards event May 14, 2015 in Knoxville. Other award winners included Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the University of Tennessee, and Pellissippi State Community College.
