NIWA supercomputer back on-line
26 May 2014 Auckland -
The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand has confirmed there were unauthorised attempts to access its supercomputer. As a precaution, NIWA took the supercomputer offline and immediately undertook a series of tests with the assistance of IBM. NIWA is able to confirm that the unauthorised attempts to gain access to the supercomputer were unsuccessful.
After taking a number of mitigation steps, the supercomputer was back on-line on May 24 with all normal services resumed.
The National Cyber Security Centre has been kept fully informed throughout the process.
The supercomputer is used to run scientific models and services and no sensitive personal or client information is stored on it.
