CA Technologies enables Logicalis UK to deliver flexible, efficient, and cost-effective Cloud computing services

3 May 2011 Slough - Logicalis UK, part of Logicalis, the international IT and Communications (ICT) solutions integrator, uses the company's IT management and automation solutions to manage the delivery and performance of its award-winning Cooperative Enterprise Cloud Service. CA Technologies service automation, service assurance, and energy and sustainability management solutions are instrumental in Logicalis UK's ability to offer customers agile, low-risk, efficient and cost-effective Cloud services.

Logicalis UK recently invested GBP 7.3 million in a new data centre, which sits at the heart of its Cloud-based offerings. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to offer high-density computing, with capacity for 2,500 virtual machines in a single rack. The Cooperative Enterprise Cloud Service, which offers private clouds hosted at its data centre, dedicated on-site private Clouds, Infrastructure-as-a-Service, and Application-as-a-Service, is built on Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS), NetApp storage, and CA Technologies IT management tools. Logicalis selected the CA Technologies solutions for the company's product capabilities and expertise in managing complex Cloud environments.

"Our aim is to offer customers cloud services that are aligned to their business needs, easy to understand, and involve minimal risk", stated Chris Gabriel, marketing director, Logicalis UK. "This means using leading technologies and specifying service level agreements that can actually be met. CA Technologies expertise in developing, managing, and securing cloud environments helps enable our customers to take maximum advantage of this economical approach to IT service delivery while supporting our business growth."

"Logicalis UK is a great example of how a Cloud provider can maximize the efficiencies of its Cloud services with CA Technologies solutions to deliver the agility and performance that customers demand", stated Dave Hansen, general manager, Enterprise Solutions and Cloud Management, CA Technologies. "We're proud of the success Logicalis UK has shown using Cisco UCS, NetApp and CA Technologies as the core of its Cloud offering."

When the Cooperative Enterprise Cloud Service was launched, Logicalis UK needed to maximize its data centre investment by achieving rapid customer adoption, consistent service levels and exceptional agility. By leveraging the stateless computing capabilities of Cisco UCS in tandem with CA Automation Suite for Data Centers, Logicalis UK is able to quickly provision customer Cloud environments and transition workloads between virtual servers based on demand and capacity.

"Using CA Automation Suite for Data Centers to create an infrastructure that is inherently dynamic, virtual, and automated, we can move large corporate applications such as Oracle and SAP between servers in as little as seven minutes", noted Chris Gabriel.

While CA Automation Suite for Data Centers enables rapid deployment and migration of workloads across the Cloud infrastructure, CA Spectrum Infrastructure Manager and CA eHealth Performance Manager pro-actively manage the performance and availability of the service delivery infrastructure - and the traffic it delivers. The ability of these products to provide 24x7 infrastructure monitoring; automated alerts to potential performance problems; automated, model-based root cause analysis; and historical and real-time reporting helps Logicalis UK maintain high quality of service levels for customers.

Logicalis UK deployed CA ecoSoftware to help measure, manage and reduce the consumption of power in the data centre. CA ecoSoftware enables Logicalis UK to collect and analyze data from points throughout the data centre to provide detailed real-time insight into energy use and efficiency. It supplies status, alerting and management information to increase the reliability of operations. In addition, CA ecoSoftware helps enable Logicalis UK to provide customers with more accurate data centre efficiency metrics and energy billings, both of which have become increasingly important when providing Cloud computing services. CA ecoSoftware also helps Logicalis UK identify inefficient power use, which can significantly reduce unnecessary electricity costs, make better use of available power capacity, and mitigate the carbon footprint associated with data centre operations.

"Data centres are massive power consumers, so it is vital that we do what we can to reduce energy usage and help our customers to do the same", added Chris Gabriel. "The Cloud has great potential for energy efficiency, but power still needs to be measured and managed. Customers also may have to comply with the UK's Carbon Reduction Commitment, so helping them with environmental governance is an important part of our Cloud-based services. Having a partner like CA Technologies helps smooth this transition and minimize risk."
