PRACE Preparatory Access completes 20th cut-off with strong participation of industry

16 Apr 2015 Brussels - PRACE Preparatory Access is a continuous Call for Proposals with a cut-off date every 3 months. The procedure to receive an allocation via Preparatory Access is lighter than that of Project Access, as it only entails a technical assessment.

Preparatory Access comes in 3 flavours:

  • Type A for code scalability tests
  • Type B for code development and optimisation
  • Type C for code development and optimisation with the support of PRACE experts.

The 20th cut-off awarded in total 5.2 million core hours on 6 machines, 150.000 GPU hours on 1 machine, and 5000 MIC hours on 1 machine, to a total of 18 projects of which 5 are industry-led projects - ArcelorMittal, CybeleTech, Imec, Rolls-Royce Deutschland and Sanofi - and 1 has collaborators from industry: Intel and NAG.

The largest allocation for this cut-off went to Dr. Giuliano Malloci of the University of Cagliari, Italy for his project entitled "Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of antimicrobial compounds in explicit water". He received a total of 250.000 core hours - 100.000 core hours on FERMI @CINECA, Italy; 50.000 on Hornet @ GCS@HLRS, Germany; and 100.000 on JUQUEEN @ GCS@FZJ, Germany.

CybeleTech, an SME in the field of agriculture, leads one of the first accepted projects from the SHAPE Second Call to be awarded access under PRACE Preparatory Access. The full list of SHAPE projects awarded under the Second Call, which will be allocated core hours via consecutive Preparatory Access cut-off dates, can be found at http://www.prace-ri.eu/shape-second-call-results/ .

The next cut-off dates for PRACE Preparatory Access are:

  • The 21st cut-off will be on 1 June 2015 at 11:00 AM CEST
  • The 22nd cut-off will be on 7 September 2015 at 11:00 AM CEST
  • The 23rd cut-off will be on 1 December 2015 at 11:00 AM CET
