The Netherlands eScience Center to fund first set of major research projects in eScience

12 Mar 2012 Amsterdam - The Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC by SURF & NWO), operational since July 2011, allocates 5,5 million euro to begin its first set of eScience projects. NLeSC collaborates with scientific research groups from both academia and industry to conduct eScience projects in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, balancing short-term eScience results and the development of a longer-term eScience strategy. The most important component of the NLeSC strategy revolves around the funding of collaborative research following a peer reviewed call procedure.

The first NLeSC project call has recently been completed providing funding for eleven new initiatives, each corresponding to one of NLeSC's prioritized domains, and ranging from Astronomy and eEcology to Life Science and eHumanities. The total funding of this initial project portfolio includes the funding of NLeSC eScience engineers, dedicated to each project, who are scientists able to work at the interface of their scientific disciplines and advanced ICT.

"The completion of this call and the initiation of our first collaborative projects is a major milestone for the development of eScience in The Netherlands, for the Netherlands eScience Center as a standing national organisation and for the implementation of our vision on eScience or enhanced Science as we refer to it. Science is at the heart of everything NLeSC does and these projects are core to this", stated Prof. Dr. Jacob de Vlieg, CEO NLeSC.

Details of the projects can be found at http://www.esciencecenter.com/projects/project-portfolio/
