GEANT Association signs contract with new Certificate Authority

14 Dec 2014 Amsterdam - Following a tendering process that started in early 2014, GEANT Association has selected DigiCert to be its new Certificate Authority (CA) provider for at least the next two years. DigiCert, a US-based company, will power the popular TERENA Certificate Service (TCS).

After careful consideration of the many requirements GEANT Association has voiced on behalf of its customers - in the form of NRENs, DigiCert clearly stood out as the preferred partner for the coming years. GEANT Association selected DigiCert based on its proven ability to deliver a wide range of certificate types, provide rapid validation services, and offer a sophisticated, yet flexible certificate portal. On top of that, the company is a leader in the industry, participating in the CA Browser Forum, IETF, and other recognised groups.

Since 2005, GEANT Association's Amsterdam office - formerly TERENA - has co-ordinated a joint procurement on behalf of European NRENs to provide Transport Layer Security (TLS) certificates to their constituencies. Initially, this service focused on server certificates, but in recent years it has been expanded to include personal certificates and code signing certificates. 29 European NRENs currently take advantage of TCS, while a further 44 NRENs have the option to sign up to the service.
