Fast calculation capacity for gigantic datasets: in every field of research this is almost a conditio sine qua non. The current Flemish supercomputer is already running at its limits for many projects and needs an update.
"The computing capacity that is needed is increasing enormously every year. Increasingly larger packages have to be processed in an increasingly shorter period of time. The new update will have that heavy capacity, will also have a storage facility and will be accessible via Cloud services. This is an enormous asset for our Flemish scientists and companies", stated Minister Muyters.
The Tier I supercomputer will be installed at the Catholic University of Leuven (KULeuven), but is accessible to other knowledge institutions and companies in an open partnership.
"Because an investment in a supercomputer is very capital intensive, we provide no less than 30 million euro. Then it is logical that we also make the capacity available to others", stated Innovation Minister Muyters. The application area of the supercomputer is enormous: from plowing databases with medical molecules, on calculating air pollution maps and the effects of climate warming, to efficiently detecting digital piracy.
