SAS OnDemand for Academics is a Cloud-based, on-line service that quickly and easily delivers the power of SAS data management and analytics software to higher education. To accommodate demand, the service will initially be offered only to US researchers, beginning in the fall. New accounts will be created on a first-come, first-served basis. Each researcher will be able to store up to 5GB of data on SAS servers in order to perform research. Sample data will also be available.
Through SAS OnDemand for Academics, researchers will have access to multiple SAS applications, such as SAS Enterprise Guide (which includes access to Base SAS) and SAS Enterprise Miner (which includes SAS Text Miner). SAS Forecast Server will be available in beta mode.
Bret Myers is a professor in the Department of Management and Operations at the Villanova School of Business. Bret Myers has used SAS Enterprise Miner to analyze soccer substitution and results data of every game of the 2009-10 season in the top English, German, Italian and Spanish professional leagues, as well as Major League Soccer and the 2010 World Cup. By applying analytics to the data, he identified the most effective times for coaches to make the allotted three substitutions when their team is trailing in the game. Teams that followed his formula approximately doubled their odds in improving goal differential.
"My only prior experience with SAS software was in a two-day workshop conducted by SAS representatives at Villanova", stated Bret Myers. "In my first opportunity to incorporate SAS products into research, I feel as if I scored a symbolic 'game-winning goal' in my ability to use analytics to generate an impactful managerial decision rule regarding soccer substitutions. Much of the success of the study can be attributed to the usability and effectiveness of SAS Enterprise Miner as a data mining tool. The initiative on the part of SAS to make its products available at no cost to academia is a huge victory for professors and students alike looking to enhance their research capabilities."
