PRACE Research Infrastructure grants 400 million compute hours on Tier-0 systems to seventeen European research projects

6 Apr 2011 Amsterdam - On this second PRACE regular call, a new system, Curie funded by GENCI and installed at CEA, Bruyères-Le-Châtel, France and designed by Bull, came into production adding capability to the PRACE Research Infrastructure (RI). Curie is the second Tier-0 system in the PRACE RI after "Jugene" (GCS at Jülich). The number of PRACE systems will continue to grow and provide more capacity and services to the European communities.

47 applications requesting a total of 1.251 million compute core hours were received in this 2nd regular call, for one year allocation on the PRACE RI resources.

The projects were chosen for their high level of scientific and technical maturity, expected impact, and demonstrated need for Tier-0 resources. The projects are from the following scientific areas: astrophysics, chemistry and material science, medicine and life sciences, engineering and energy, fundamental physics and mathematics. All proposals underwent a peer review process governed by the PRACE Scientific Steering Committee including PRACE technical assessment.

The following seventeen projects were granted access to PRACE RI resources:

  • Ab Initio Modeling of Solar Active Regions, Prof. Aake Nordlund, University of Copenhagen Niels Bohr Institute
  • Accretion disk dynamics: the multifluid regime, Dr. Turlough Downes, Dublin City University School of Mathematical Sciences
  • Discrete logarithm on a 160-bit elliptic curve over F(p^6), Prof. Antoine Joux, Univ. Versailles St-Quentin-en-Yvelines PRISM
  • Diversity of Type Ia supernovae from initial conditions of the exploding white dwarf star, Dr. Ivo Seitenzahl, Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG). Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics
  • Extreme Earthquake Wave Propagation Modelling (E2WPM), Dr. Mike Ashworth, STFC Daresbury Laboratory Computational Science & Engineering
  • Ion-switched biomolecular recognition as an assembly tool for nanotechnology, Prof. Fabrizio Cleri, University of Lille I Institute of Electronics Microelectronics and Nanotechnology
  • Large Scale simulations of Ly-alpha and Ly-break galaxies in the high-z universe: Probing the epoch of reionization, Prof. Gustavo Yepes, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. Departamento de Fisica Teorica
  • Large-Eddy Simulation of high-frequency instabilities under transcritical conditions, Dr. Gabriel Staffelbach, CERFACS CFD
  • LHCb Physics and Nucleon Distribution Amplitudes, Dr. Roger Horsley, University of Edinburgh School of Physics and Astronomy
  • MHD turbulence in the Interstellar Medium: Linking Star Formation and Galaxy Dynamics, Dr. Frederic Bournaud, CEA Saclay DSM/IRFU
  • MS-COMB: Multi-Scale Analysis and Numerical Strategies for the Simulation of Premixed Turbulent Combustion in Realistic Geometries, Dr. Vincent Moureau, CORIA - CNRS UMR6614 Combustion
  • Probing the Limits of the Standard Model with Lattice Simulations, Prof Hartmut Wittig, University of Mainz Nuclear Physics
  • REFIT: Rotation effects on flow instabilities and turbulence, Prof. Arne Johansson, KTH Department of Mechanics
  • SOULAC (Simulation Of Ultra-intense Laser Acceleration of ions), Dr. Erik Lefebvre, CEA, DAM, DIF, DPTA
  • Structural and conformational requisites in the folding process of the DNA quadruplex aptamer TBA, Prof. Michele Parrinello, ETH Zurich Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences
  • The molecular bases of the transport cycle of APC antiporters, Prof. Modesto Orozco, Institute for Research in Biomedicine. Structural and Computational Biology
  • Understanding and Predicting the Properties of Clay-Polymer Nanocomposites using Petascale Computing, Prof. Peter Coveney, University College of London Department of Chemistry

The 3rd PRACE regular call for a one year allocation starting November 1st, 2011 will open on May 2nd, 2011 for projects from all scientific areas.
