The event also received an international media spotlight, with 58 technical and business press representatives on site. Many are eager to provide live coverage of the exhibition, the new number 1 system on the TOP500 list, and the keynote address by Baidu's chief scientist, Andrew Ng, as well as the numerous sessions in the conference programme.
ISC High Performance turned 31 this year, making it the world's oldest HPC community forum and Europe's largest HPC exhibition. Frankfurt is the conferences sixth destination, following Mannheim, Heidelberg, Dresden, Hamburg, and Leipzig.
In 1986, the late Hans Werner Meuer, in his capacity as the director of the Mannheim Computing Center and professor for computer science, organized the world's first "Supercomputer Seminar" at Mannheim University. In its inaugural year, it drew 81 attendees, mostly German-speaking. Today it is valued by over 3,000 international attendees as a "must attend" HPC event.
The ISC 2016 Exhibition hosts a total of 146 exhibitors: 97 vendors, 46 research and 3 media organisations.
Twenty-three of them are first-time exhibitors. The exhibition covers 2169 square meters of floor space exhibits.
"Within the last two years, the ISC conference has turned into a fully community-supported event. Its value to attendees is a direct result of the high level of involvement by the HPC community", remarked ISC General Co-Chair Martin Meuer. "Our programme committee, which consists of an annual rotating programme chair and committee chairs, continue to innovate the conference programme. This year they were responsible for introducing machine learning and Industrie 4.0 to the attendees. We are also pleased to witness their dedication to elevating the academic credibility of the conference. The selection process for research papers, for example, has never been as stringent as it has this year."
