Mellanox interconnect solutions accelerate new HP Apollo family

23 Jun 2014 Leipzig - HP's Apollo family of high-performance computing systems are accelerated by Mellanox's FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand and 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet interconnect solutions to maximize data centre return-on-investment and solve space and energy efficiency challenges.

The HP Apollo family utilizes a modular rack design with advanced air and water cooling techniques, Smart Memory and Smart Sensors. Compared to standard rack servers of the same footprint, the new systems increase performance by 4X while using less energy. The new HP Apollo family with Mellanox interconnects, enables enterprises to take advantage of the power of data and to enhance their processing capabilities for the applications of tomorrow.

"The joint solution enables customers to quickly deploy a scalable and efficient high-performance data centre and accelerate their mission critical applications, while significantly reducing costs."

"Enterprises looking to adopt HPC technology and early adopters can both benefit from the economic and environmental gains with our new solutions."

The HP Apollo portfolio features the HP Apollo 6000 System and HP Apollo 8000 System. The HP Apollo 6000 system has an air cooled server rack design with up to 160 servers per rack, external power shelf and Mellanox's ConnectX-3 adapter cards with Virtual Protocol Interconnect (VPI). The ConnectX-3 adapter cards with VPI supports FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand and 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet with RoCE connectivity. The solution reduces operating expenses by up to 45 percent and decreases floor space by up to 60 percent than a competing blade. Enterprises with demanding applications such as electronic design automation or financial service risk analysis can now leverage the power of HPC with an infrastructure that is flexible, affordable and easy to manage.

The HP Apollo 8000 System, with Mellanox's ConnectX-3 Pro FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand dual-port adapters and SwitchX-2 FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand, has up to 144 servers per rack and is a 100 percent water-cooled supercomputer with 4X more teraflops of performance per rack compared to air cooled designs. The eco-friendly design eliminates up to 3,800 tons of carbon dioxide waste per year from each data centre and the water used to cool the system can be used as a heat source for facilities, further reducing operating expenses.
