APM & E4 launch EK003 family of high-performance, energy efficient servers for HPC data centres

23 Jun 2014 Sunnyvale - Applied Micro Circuits Corporation and E4 Computer Engineering have joined forces to design EK003 a low-power solution part of E4's ARKA series, targeting High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data workloads.

The platform combines AppliedMicro's high-performance, low-power X-Gene CPU processor architecture with NVIDIA Tesla K20 GPU accelerators to deliver industry-leading performance per watt. The platform addresses a wide range of HPC workloads, including bioinformatics, CAD/ CFD, imaging and computer vision, as well as data analytics.

"We felt an immediate connection to AppliedMicro in terms of our shared culture of dynamic innovation and challenging conventional wisdom", stated Piero Altoè, Business Development Manager, E4 Computer Engineering. "AppliedMicro's X-Gene solution has proven to be one of the most interesting devices to enable high performance low-power, platforms which will be welcomed by all HPC users."

"X-Gene's revolutionary Server on a Chip architecture delivers the performance, power efficiency, and scalability required by high-performance computing and data centre operators at the lowest total cost of ownership", stated Gaurav Singh, Vice President of Technology Strategy at AppliedMicro. "With its rich history in designing and manufacturing high-performance systems, E4 Computer Engineering is a great partner for this endeavour."

"GPUs make 64-bit ARM servers a fantastic option for HPC data centers, due to the processing power, development ecosystem and application support of NVIDIA GPUs", stated Ian Buck, vice president of Accelerated Computing, at NVIDIA. "The new GPU-accelerated ARM64 servers from E4 and others will provide customers with an expanded range of efficient, high-performance computing options to drive compute-intensive HPC workloads."

The EK003 was introduced at the International Super Computing Conference 2014 in Leipzig, Germany. Attendees can visit E4 Computer Engineering in booth no. 363 at the show and AppliedMicro in booth no. 506.
