Eurotech presents Aurora Au-5600, one of the first Intel Cluster Ready supercomputers supporting the new 6-core Intel Xeon processor 5600 series.

31 May 2010 Hamburg - Eurotech presents Aurora Au-5600, the new release of its ultra-efficient HPC system family. Aurora is one of the leading supercomputing platforms in terms of power saving and scalability; with support for the new Intel Xeon processor 5600 series CPU, Aurora delivers unprecedented levels of performance with the advantage of a certified Intel Cluster Ready software environment.

Aurora is the smart HPC architecture for the most demanding needs: thanks to its highly integrated, minimalistic and streamlined design it allows exceptional Flops per Watt ratio, outstanding TCO savings and one of the best Flops per square meter density.

"Aurora marks a new approach to HPC", stated Giampietro Tecchiolli, Eurotech Group VP and CTO, "An approach that fits the quest for sustainable performance. Clearly, performance has always been a priority, but TCO, scalability and reliability are crucial. With Aurora Au-5600, Eurotech updates its groundbreaking architecture with the latest 6-core Intel CPU, the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series. By using the new processor, Aurora Au-5600 allows packing an unprecedented number of cores: one single Aurora rack contains up to 3.072 cores and delivers up to 41TFlops.

This massive computational capacity is compatible with the existing X86 software applications and development tools; in fact, Aurora Au-5600 is one of the first Intel Xeon processor 5600 series based systems that is Intel Cluster Ready certified.

"Aurora brings an exceptional value to the HPC customers", stated Dr. Herbert Cornelius, Intel Director Advanced Computing Center EMEA, "By utilizing the Intel Cluster Ready architecture it allows that creating, installing and managing even the most sophisticated software set-up is greatly simplified and delivering increased productivity and interoperability of HPC cluster solutions."

Aurora features a number of high end technologies, such as 100Gb/s bandwidth per node, with a 60Gb/s 3D torus and a 40Gb/s Infiniband interface; multilevel synchronization networks for highly efficient scalability, and an on board, programmable accelerator can be used to implement highly optimized algorithms.

With its exclusive liquid cooling system, Aurora has one of the best Power Usage Efficiency values and is one of the most reliable HPC platforms: by using liquid cooling it's possible to control the temperature of each component with a precision and efficiency that air cooling simply cannot match; moreover, the total absence of fans and moving parts completely eliminates one of the most significant sources of downtime.
