The K in K computer, the world's fastest supercomputer
20 Jun 2011 Hamburg -
The fastest computer in the world, just called K? One letter? Yes, it is not
that they ran out of inspiration at Riken. K (or Kei as we know the Japanese character outside Asia) has several meanings. One is a gateway, and the K-computer is expected to be a gateway that opens up new ways for scientific discoveries. Another meaning is 10**16, which happens to be the speed of the machine: 10 Petaflop/s. And it is related to Kobe, home of the K computer.
