Dutch research network SURFnet now tops at 400 Gbit/s with new Utrecht-Breda connection

16 Jun 2017 Utrecht - On Friday, June 9th, SURFnet together with ECI Telecom and Tallgrass deployed a 400 Gbit/s connection between Breda and Utrecht. With 400 Gbit/s, this new direct link offers extremely high capacity for education and research in the Netherlands. This is about thousand times faster than the fastest home network connection in the Netherlands.

The connection between Breda and Utrecht is the first direct link between these two locations in the SURFnet network. ECI's Apollo platform is used to provide this first 400 Gbit/s connection for the optical layer on a new optical fibre. This is the kick-off for the implementation of the new optical layer of the SURFnet network.

With the new optical layer, 400 Gbit/s is possible, and 100 Gbit/s transmission capacity will become standard. The Apollo platform offers high capacity, flexible DWDM transport, with many options for software-based applications and network function virtualisation (NFV) in the future. In addition, optical connections can be recovered automatically.

In 2017 SURFnet implements the new optical layer. This will be followed by an advanced service layer in 2018.
