US supercomputer acquisition should not fall into the same category as everyday technology under the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act

1 May 2016 Washington - Chase Gunter reports in FCW that panelists at a Capitol Hill conference on high-performance computing said they believe supercomputer acquisition should not fall into the same category as everyday technology under the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act. Gunter writes that the Obama administration remains opposed to a FITARA exemption for the national labs but has proposed substantial financial support to maximize the impact of high-performance computing systems. Officials are seeking $285 million to fund DOE's fiscal 2017 research and development efforts into exascale computing, as part of the National Strategic Computing Initiative.
