Five bids for EuroHPC petascale supercomputers

26 Apr 2019 Luxembourg - There are five proposals submitted for EuroHPC cofunded supercomputers. Candidate hosting entities that submitted a proposal: LuxConnect S.A. (Luxembourg); Institute of Information Science (Slovenia); Petascale Supercomputing Consortium Bulgaria (Bulgaria); IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre (Czech Republic); Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portugal). Spain joined the Portuguese proposal. The total budget available is 30 million euro for at least two petascale systems. The EuroHPC JU will contribute at most 35% of the costs.

The EuroHPC JU will evaluate these proposals in April and May, along with those from the recent call for hosting entities for precursor to exascale supercomputers, with the help of independent experts. Based on the evaluation results, the Governing Board of the Joint Undertaking will select the successful proposals in early June. The results of the call will be announced shortly afterwards.

The acquisition process should start in July, with the installation in the selected hosting entities taking place during the first half of 2020.

The share of the EuroHPC access time to each of the new supercomputers will be directly proportional to the financial contribution of the EU to the acquisition costs of these supercomputers. This access time will be made available to research users from all EU Member States and Horizon 2020-associated countries via an open competition procedure.
