From its virtual 4m below sealevel studioPrimeur Magazinereported from the Russian Supercomputing Days that did not take place physically in Moscow this year but were virtually held online on September 21-22, 2020. The second day session is highlighted in this video with the main keynotes about the future of HPC. This session was chaired by Vladimir Voevodin. He introduced three speakers. The first one was Thomas Lippert from the Jülich Supercomputing Center who talked about the European developments and mainly PRACE. The second one was Mateo Valero from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) who talked about BSC's activities in high performance computing. From downtown Almere's virtual studio Primeur Magazinehad the opportunity to interview University of Nottingham coordinator Xuerui Mao and Brazilian partner Bruno Souza Carmo, who works at the University of São Paulo, about the High-Performance Computing for Wind Energy (HPCWE) project. Xuerui Mao explained that HPCWE has 11 partners. Eight of them are from Europe and three are from Brazil. This consortium covers SME industries, HPC centres and universities. Coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and funded by the European Commission, this recently launched HPC centre of excellence will optimise codes for cell-level simulations in HPC/Exascale and bridge the gap between organ and molecular simulations, thus contributing to the European Personalised Medicine Roadmap. Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, has signed a new contract with Linköping University to build Sweden's fastest supercomputer for machine learning and artificial intelligence. It will deliver 300 petaflops of AI performance and will be based on the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD computing infrastructure. It will be named BerzeLiUs, named after renowned Swedish scientist Jacob Berzelius. Construction and installation will begin at the start of 2021. Read further...
Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, has inaugurated its BullSequana XH2000 supercomputer, named Mahti, at CSC - the Finnish IT Center for Science Ltd. The virtual ceremony was opened by Director of the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, Erja Heikkinen, and included presentations from six pilot users who have run large scale simulations on the supercomputer since its installation in August. Vattenfall and CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd have concluded an agreement on the supply of guarantee of origin-certified renewable energy. The renewable electricity supplied to CSC by Vattenfall is in the form of hydropower. The ecological energy supplied under the agreement will be needed to power the supercomputer environments of CSC's data centre in Kajaani, Finland. Read further...

Liqid, provider of the world's most-comprehensive composable disaggregated infrastructure (CDI) platform, has been awarded two contracts from the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide three composable supercomputing systems that include more than 900 NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs and NVIDIA Mellanox HDR 200 gigabit per second InfiniBand smart networking. The systems, worth more than $52 million, will be the largest composable supercomputer in deployment. Secure telecommunications networks and rapid information processing make much of modern life possible. To provide more secure, faster, and higher-performance information sharing than is currently possible, scientists and engineers are designing next-generation devices that harness the rules of quantum physics. Those designs rely on single photons to encode and transmit information across quantum networks and between quantum chips. Magnetic fields are used in various areas of modern physics and engineering, with practical applications ranging from doorbells to maglev trains. Since Nikola Tesla's discoveries in the 19th century, researchers have strived to realize strong magnetic fields in laboratories for fundamental studies and diverse applications, but the magnetic strength of familiar examples are relatively weak. Geomagnetism is 0.3-0.5 gauss (G) and magnetic tomography (MRI) used in hospitals is about 1 tesla (T = 104G). By contrast, future magnetic fusion and maglev trains will require magnetic fields on the kilotesla (kT = 107G) order. There's a kind of bravado implicit in supercomputing. How large a simulation can you run? How many processors can you use simultaneously? How efficiently can you scale your code? All for the good of science and society. The Texascale Days event during the first week of September 2020 provided an opportunity for eight research groups to use large sections of the National Science Foundation-funded Frontera supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), from 100.000 processors to the entire system - nearly 450.000 processors - a scale at which very few simulations have ever been performed. The event allowed scientists to push their codes to new limits, to accomplish weeks' worth of work in 24 hours, and to explore new algorithms with the capability of improving computational science across the board at scale.
