The focus in this video is on the relationship between RISC-V and high performance computing. Firstly, the European Processor Initiative (EPI) is highlighted. The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC), Ireland's High-Performance Computing authority announced on September 11, the details of seven academic projects which will be supported by its new Academic Flagship Programme. This two year programme aims to increase Irish competitiveness in the European supercomputing landscape. The seven successful projects were selected from a competitive call which received 13 proposals from researchers distributed across 17 universities/institutes across Ireland, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Japan and the USA. The Academic Flagship Programme will operate under the EuroHPC Competency Centre for Ireland which ICHEC recently launched. It is one of 33 similar centres across Europe which form the ambitious EuroHPC programme. Read further...

Donna J. Cox, director of NCSA's Advanced Visualization Laboratory (AVL), was recently awarded the International Planetarium Society's 2020 Technology Innovation Award. This is just the eighth time since the society's founding in 1958 that this honor has been bestowed. It is only awarded when a recipient is identified as meeting the award criteria: an individual with "a broad, deep and concrete effect in the profession and its development" and "whose technology and/or innovations in the planetarium field have been, through the years, utilized or replicated by other members and/or other planetariums". The Unified Communication Framework (UCF), a collaboration of industry, laboratories, and academia to create production-grade communication frameworks and open standards for data-centric and high-performance applications, has announced an open source contribution of an OpenSHMEM-based I/O research extension to access persistent memory storage, in collaboration with Arm. Provided to the UCF's Open Smart Network Application Programming Interface (OpenSNAPI) project, the open source software enables Smart Networking Adapters to provide real-time access to large datasets and deliver higher application performance for latency-sensitive applications such as fraud detection, cybersecurity analysis, web-scale personalization, and Internet of Things (IoT). Quantum Corp. has announced that Genomics England has expanded their Quantum ActiveScale object storage solution as part of an integrated environment designed to store, protect, and provide access to hundreds of petabytes of genomic data. The solution enabled the organisation to scale up from sequencing 100.000 genomes to millions while improving data resilience, controlling costs, and avoiding IT complexity. The implementation supports Genomics England's commitment to sequence the genomes of intensive care patients with COVID-19 and other people with the virus and is an example of Quantum's leadership in storing and managing unstructured data. NVIDIA and SoftBank Group Corp. (SBG) have signed a definitive agreement under which NVIDIA will acquire Arm Limited from SBG and the SoftBank Vision Fund (together, "SoftBank") in a transaction valued at $40 billion. The centre is a collaborative effort between NCSA, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Department of Astronomy, and the Department of Physics at Illinois which seeks to bring cohesion and advancement to astrophysical survey science efforts across campus. The largest collaborative undertaking yet to explore the relic light emitted by the infant universe has taken a step forward with the U.S. Department of Energy's selection of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to lead the partnership of national labs, universities, and other institutions that will carry out the DOE roles and responsibilities for the effort. This next-generation experiment, known as CMB-S4, or Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4, is being planned to become a joint DOE and National Science Foundation project. Read further...
Insilico Medicine, a global expert in artificial intelligence for drug discovery and development, has launched a new system for COVID-19 basic and clinical research. COVIDomic is a foundational technology which enables scientists to use anonymized patient data to integrate with a variety of existing data sets. Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can then be applied in many ways, starting with better stratifying COVID-19 patients, understanding the disease trajectory and identifying relevant disease pathways and targets. The EBRAINS infrastructure for neuroscience has officially submitted an application for inclusion in the ESFRI Roadmap 2021. EBRAINS offers researchers a comprehensive package of powerful tools, facilities and resources that have been jointly developed by scientists and engineers in the Human Brain Project, a ten-year European Flagship project running until 2023. ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, plays a central role in establishing shared infrastructures for Science in Europe and helps guide decisions in research policy. The application of EBRAINS to the ESFRI Roadmap is supported by a ten-country strong coalition, led by France as lead country.
