Kristel Michielsen, who is leading the research group Quantum Information Processing at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, addressed the topic of quantum classical hybrid computing models in modular HPC systems at ISC 2020 Digital. Quantum computing is a new disruptive computer technology. There is a diverse user group in science and industry with various hard computational challenges to unravel complex systems. The general belief is that quantum computing can help to solve these hard problems. In quantum computing, one has three potential classes of problems that can be solved by quantum computing. The first class comprises quantum simulations. One can think for example about quantum chemistry problems. A second class of potential applications are optimization problems, for example, the optimization of traffic flow or the optimization in drug design. As optimization is a first step in machine learning, quantum machine learning is a third class of potential applications in quantum computing. Read further...

Following the open e-IRG Workshop webinars under Croatian EU Presidency,Primeur Magazinehad the opportunity to talk with e-IRG Chair Paolo Budroni about the plans the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group is hoping to carry out in the months to come. e-IRG is a strategic body to facilitate the integration in the area of European infrastructures and connected services within and between Member States at the European level and globally. As a body, e-IRG is composed of national delegates who are appointed by the Member States. Each country has two delegates. Of course, e-IRG also has delegates from the Associated Countries. e-IRG's mission is to support both coherent, innovative and strategic European infrastructures policy making and the development of convergent, sustainable infrastructure services. The material is of interest not only in basic research but also for various applications given to its unique properties, which include excellent electrical conductivity as well as astonishing strength and rigidity. Research teams around the world are working to further expand these characteristics by substituting carbon atoms in the crystal lattice with atoms of different elements. The company is proposing to transfer its two IoT Services Group (ISG) businesses, IoT Platform and Treasure Data, to new entities that would be owned and operated by SoftBank Group Corp. and its affiliates. Imec, a global research and innovation hub in nano-electronics and digital technologies, and GLOBALFOUNDRIES (GF), a global specialty foundry, have announced a hardware demonstration of a new artificial intelligence chip. Based on imec's Analog in Memory Computing (AiMC) architecture utilizing GF's 22FDX solution, the new chip is optimized to perform deep neural network calculations on in-memory computing hardware in the analogue domain. Achieving record-high energy efficiency up to 2900 TOPS/W, the accelerator is a key enabler for inference-on-the-edge for low-power devices. The Biocomputing Unit at the Spanish National Center for Biotechnology (CNB), part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), is using Atos' supercomputing resource to produce a refined 3D model of the SARS-Cov2 spike protein. By knowing more detail about the structure of this protein, which is the one that the virus uses to enter human cells, researchers can better understand how the virus initiates infection.
