IQM Finland Oy, a European company for quantum computer hardware, was just awarded a 2,5 million euro grant and up to 15 million euro of equity investment from the EIC Accelerator programme for the development of quantum computers, benefiting the industry and the society at large. Together with Business Finland grants of 3,3 million euro that IQM received so far, the company is on a fast run with more than 20 million euro more raised in less than a year from its 11,4 million euro seed round, summing in total to 32 million euro. Science Minister Amanda Solloway has announced 38 new UK projects that will benefit from more than GBP 70 million government investment to help mark the start of Quantum Tech Digital Week. The new projects aim to solve global challenges and address key industrial challenges, from developing batteries for electric vehicles to innovating energy storage systems that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, via the use of advanced quantum technologies. NEC Corporation, an expert in the integration of IT and network technologies, and D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software and services, have begun joint activities to combine the compute power of NEC's systems with the quantum computing power of D-Wave's systems, software and Cloud service to bring those combined capabilities to customers in Japan. A joint research team from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Institute of Physics at Chinese Academy of Science, Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, Beihang University in Beijing and Fudan University in Shanghai, has provided a successful example of modern era quantum material research. By means of the state-of-art quantum many-body simulations, performed on the world's fastest supercomputers, researchers from various institutions including the University of Hong Kong have achieved accurate model calculations for a rare-earth magnet TmMgGaO4 (TMGO). They found that the material, under the correct temperature regime, could realise the the long-sought-after two-dimensional topological Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase, which completed the pursuit of identifying the KT physics in quantum magnetic materials for half a century. Programming quantum computers is becoming easier: computer scientists at ETH Zurich have designed the first programming language that can be used to program quantum computers as simply, reliably and safely as classical computers. "Programming quantum computers is still a challenge for researchers", according to Martin Vechev, computer science professor in ETH's Secure, Reliable and Intelligent Systems Lab (SRI), "which is why I'm so excited that we can now continue ETH Zurich's tradition in the development of quantum computers and programming languages." The Management Board of the Northern Data AG has resolved with the approval of the Supervisory Board to increase the company's issued share capital by issuing 431.225 new no-par value ordinary bearer shares. This corresponds to 3,64% of the current share capital. The shares are issued against cash contributions partially utilizing the existing authorized capital and excluding the existing shareholders' subscription rights. EU-funded consortium Exscalate4CoV has announced that an already registered generic drug used to treat osteoporosis, Raloxifene, could be an effective treatment for COVID-19 patients with mildly symptomatic infection. The consortium is using an EU-backed supercomputing platform, one of the world's most powerful, to check the potential impact of known molecules against the genomic structure of coronavirus.
