ICHEC, the Irish Centre for High-End Computing which manages the national supercomputer and delivers complex compute solutions to Irish HEAs, Enterprises and the Public Sector, has appointed Dr. Elise Jennings, to the position of Senior Computational Scientist (Research Fellow) with responsibility for the creation of an exascaling team as part of the European High Performance Computing (EuroHPC) Competence Centre for Ireland. The EuroHPC competency centre in Ireland is managed by ICHEC. EuroHPC is a 1 billion euro Joint Undertaking between the EU and European countries to develop a World Class Supercomputing Ecosystem in Europe. Read further...

One of Erich Strohmaier's first realizations, when he came to the United States in 1995, was that despite what his guidebook told him, the wooded areas of East Tennessee weren't all that much like the Bavarian forests he grew up in. But it worked out for him, which seems to be a pattern in his life. After 20 years at UC San Diego, Larry Smarr will step down as the director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and retire as a distinguished professor from the Jacobs School of Engineering's Computer Science and Engineering Department at the end of this month. Dr. Ramesh Rao, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering, will serve as interim director of Calit2, in addition to his current position as the director of the Qualcomm Institute. Intel has announced that Jim Keller has resigned effective June 11, 2020, due to personal reasons. Intel appreciates Mr. Keller's work over the past two years helping them continue advancing Intel's product leadership and they wish him and his family all the best for the future. A $5 million National Science Foundation (NSF) award will allow the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) to deploy a unique high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) system. Neocortex will introduce fundamentally new hardware to greatly speed AI research. PSC, a joint research organisation of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, will build the new supercomputer in partnership with Cerebras Systems and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Northern Data AG, one of the world's largest providers of high-performance computing (HPC) solutions, now expects to expand its new HPC data centre in Texas in the first year to an operating capacity of 1000 MW (1 gigawatt, GW). According to the latest investigations by TrendForce, the combined revenues of the top 10 foundries increased by more than 20% YoY in 2Q20. This growth took place as there was not a massive reduction in wafer start orders in 1Q20, while foundry clients expanded their orders in 2Q20 due to both increased production of existing devices and new applications generated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The comparatively low base period in 2Q19 also contributed to the YoY increase in foundry revenue in 2Q20. Read further...

Wind-generated ocean waves - "wind waves" - can be major disruptors of coastal communities, marine ecosystems, offshore industries, and shipping, causing considerable environmental, geophysical, and socio-economic impacts across the globe. Large waves during past winter storms, for example, stripped volumes of sand from Monterey, California beaches, attacked vulnerable marine terraces, and ultimately caused steep cliffs near Big Sur to crash into the sea. Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland have demonstrated that new distance-based machine learning methods are capable of predicting structures and atomic dynamics of nanoparticles reliably. The new methods are significantly faster than traditional simulation methods used for nanoparticle research and will facilitate more efficient explorations of particle-particle reactions and particles' functionality in their environment. With COVID-19 drastically altering daily life for people across the planet, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has moved quickly to join the global fight against the pandemic. Among the laboratory's most powerful resources for scientific research is the supercomputer Theta, housed at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a DOE Office of Science User Facility.
