Smartphone users are being encouraged to harness the collective processing power of their mobile phones to help speed up research into treatments for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) using the free DreamLab app, as part of a partnership between Vodafone Foundation and scientists at Imperial College London. Focus on Europe

Two of the most powerful supercomputers in France, Joliot-Curie, operated at the CEA's supercomputing centre (TGCC), and Occigen, operated at CPU's supercomputing centre (CINES), are providing urgent computing access to large computer resources to European research teams involved in the fight against COVID-19. The aim is to perform epidemiological studies of COVID-19 virus spread, understand its molecular structure and behaviour and massively screen and test potential future molecules, to accelerate the search for an effective vaccine and support the global fight against the virus. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a major threat worldwide due to its highly contagious nature. As of today, we have passed the mark of a million identified cases worldwide, and we have not yet reached the peak of the epidemic. At present, there are no established drugs or vaccines available against it. The OpenMP API has been used to parallelize the Lamarckian Genetic Algorithm used in AutoDock 4.2, the de-facto standard application for molecular docking, one of the key steps in identifying drug candidates. Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, has announced that two of its supercomputers in Brazil are being used in research for the development of vaccines and medicine against the coronavirus. These are Santos Dumont, which belongs to the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC), and Ogbon, at SENAI CIMATEC. The supercomputers are considered the largest in Brazil and in South America and are in the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. Astronomers have been awarded 45 million units of supercomputing time to study the influence of supermassive black holes on their host galaxies.
