Crowd computing

People around the world are isolating themselves to help slow the spread of COVID-19. But there is another way those confined to their homes - but connected online - can join the fight against the novel coronavirus. Among the research programmes racing to develop therapies and vaccines for this new pandemic virus is one of the largest crowdsourced supercomputing projects in the world. Read further...

Focus on Europe

Advancing the state of the art is the main goal of the EU funded project LEXIS - Large-scale EXecution for Industry and Society. It is steadily moving along the path towards a successful convergence of HPC and Cloud technologies. The LEXIS project will build an advanced engineering platform at the confluence of HPC, Cloud and Big Data which will leverage large-scale geographically-distributed resources from existing HPC infrastructure, employ Big Data analytics solutions and augment them with Cloud services. Italy is leading Exscalate4CoV (E4C), the public-private consortium receiving 3 million euro from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 tender for projects to counter the coronavirus pandemic and improve the management and care of patients. The tender assigned a total of 47,5 million euro to 17 projects. Read further...
The rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus highlights the need for an open analytics environment so that the global research community can collaborate on developing effective countermeasures. Read further...
Launched on 1 January and coordinated by Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the European project AMPERE - A Model-driven development framework for highly Parallel and EneRgy-Efficient computation supporting multi-criteria optimisation - will implement an innovative software architecture that takes into account the non-functional requirements inherited from the cyber-physical interactions, such as time predictability, energy-efficiency, safety and security. Hardware

On the heels of their strategic partnership, Rittal, a global systems provider of IT infrastructure as well as industrial solutions, and ZutaCore, a waterless, two-phase, liquid cooling company, have announced the first Rittal HPC Cooled-by-ZutaCore solutions. First, is a rear-door-air (RDA) solution, part of Rittal's LCP system portfolio. It is compact, therefore saves valuable rack space as all of the liquid cooling components are incorporated directly into the rear door. It can be easily deployed into existing data centres without modifying existing infrastructure. Second, is the In-Rack Edge solution, available in both air-cooled and water-cooled versions. The air-cooled In-Rack Edge solutions can be installed into any rack in almost any environment, enabling the exponential demand for high-powered processing at the edge or in the data centre. The water-cooled version enables extremely energy efficient cooling of up to 70 kW of processors in a single rack. This unit is designed to handle fast growing processor and server power. Intel has announced the readiness of Pohoiki Springs, its latest and most powerful neuromorphic research system providing the computational capacity of 100 million neurons. The Cloud-based system will be made available to members of the Intel Neuromorphic Research Community (INRC), extending their neuromorphic work to solve larger, more complex problems. Read further...
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is affecting China and is spreading within East Asia and into Europe and North America. In addition to the human cost of life, the impact of the spread of the virus on the global economy is only beginning to be appreciated and has deep implications for the world's technology supply chain. A new International Data Corporation (IDC) report, "Impact of COVID-19 on the Worldwide Semiconductor Market Forecast" (IDC #US46115520), provides IDC's view on the impact the COVID-19 virus will have on the semiconductor market. The latest investigations by TrendForce show that the foundry industry benefitted from the previous quarter's order fulfillment and client stock-up demands, with overall projected revenue undergoing a slight 2% dip QoQ but about 30% growth YoY in 1Q20 due to the comparatively lower 1Q19 base period. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic causes repercussions in global markets, and the economy enters a corresponding slowdown, the foundry industry now faces major uncertainties on the demand side, possibly slowing the industry's future growth momentum.
