DDN, a global expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and multi-Cloud data management, has collaborated with Atos, a global specialist in digital transformation, to enhance weather prediction capabilities for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). ECMWF will be equipped with an enhanced computing capacity to help predict the occurrence and intensity of extreme weather events significantly ahead of time, with an improved infrastructure comprised of more than 91PB of DDN EXAScaler storage, connected to BullSequana XH2000 supercomputer from Atos. The 2020 Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics will be awarded to Leon O. Chua, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley in the US. Leon O. Chua's work spans fields from nano-electronics to non-linear circuits and systems, robotics and computational biology, and over his long career his papers have been cited around 80.000 times. He will be presented with this award, which comes with a prize of US$5000, at the Magnus-Haus in Berlin, Germany on 18 September 2020. It should be possible for researchers in the life sciences to draw on powerful technological services throughout Germany when they need to analyse large data sets. This is why the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) invested about 80 million euro in a major large-scale project: the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI). With the installation of the first of three Extreme Scale Booster (ESB) racks by MEGWARE, the build-up of the DEEP-EST prototype at Jülich reaches its third round. NTT Research Inc., a division of NTT, has announced that its Cryptography and Information Security (CIS) Lab has reached joint research agreements with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Georgetown University. The five-year agreement with UCLA covers research on the theoretical aspects of cryptography, and the three-year agreement with Georgetown University will take advantage of a global scale testbed for research into blockchain. A team of researchers from the University of California San Diego and the University of Pittsburgh offers a new approach for developing treatments for influenza. This version of the flu called pandemic Influenza A H1N1 2009, or pH1N1, differs from the Coronavirus, and has been known to kill hundreds of thousands of people each year. The Center for Disease Control estimates that it affected nearly 61 million people, resulting in more than 12.000 deaths, in the United States alone. The H1N1 virus also circulates among bird and pig populations, causing seasonal epidemic and pandemic outbreaks, such as the 1918 Spanish Flu, which killed millions of people worldwide. Forty research teams, 16 Blue Waters Professors, and 3 strategic projects at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been allocated computation time on the National Center for Supercomputing Applications' (NCSA) Blue Waters supercomputerfor use in 2020. These allocations range from 50.000 to 1.000.000 node-hours of compute time over one year, and altogether total more than 21 million node-hours (over 670 million core-hour equivalents), valued at over $13 million. The research pursuits of these teams are incredibly diverse, ranging anywhere from studies on the disassembly of the Hepatitis B virus capsid to simulating neutron stars and black holes. The United States is reclaiming a global top spot in high-performance computing to support weather and climate forecasts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce, has announced a significant upgrade to computing capacity, storage space, and interconnect speed of its Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System. Scientists from UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz and Duke University synchronized their research watches to study what makes our biological clocks tick. Specifically, they set out to understand why some people are what they call extreme "morning larks" who operate on a shorter 20-hour cycle compared to a regular 24-hour pattern. Microsoft has announced that Azure HBv2-series Virtual Machines (VMs) are now generally available in the South Central US region. HBv2 VMs will also be available in West Europe, East US, West US 2, North Central US, Japan East soon. HBv2 VMs deliver supercomputer-class performance, message passing interface (MPI) scalability, and cost efficiency for a variety of real-world high performance computing (HPC) workloads, such as CFD, explicit finite element analysis, seismic processing, reservoir modelling, rendering, and weather simulation.
