Exascale supercomputing

EPCC has performed a major upgrade and extension to the life of the successful Cirrus EPSRC Tier 2 HPC service. As announced by the UK Government, EPCC has received 3,5 million funding over 4 years to continue the Cirrus service until early 2024. EPCC will add 144 NVIDIA V100 GPUs to the system and a 256TB high performance storage layer for the most demanding data streaming applications. Read further...

QuTech has resolved a major issue on the road towards a working large-scale quantum computer. QuTech, together with Intel, has designed and fabricated an integrated circuit that can operate at extremely low temperatures when controlling qubits, the essential building blocks of a quantum computer. This paves the way for the crucial integration of qubits and their controlling electronics in the same chip. The scientists have presented their research during the ISSCC Conference in San Francisco. On February 19, 2020, at the High-Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart (HLRS), Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Education and Research Michael Meister, and Baden-Württemberg Science Minister Theresia Bauer joined in a ceremony marking the beginning of operation of HLRS's new supercomputer, called "Hawk". With a peak performance of approximately 26 Petaflops (26 quadrillion floating point operations per second), Hawk - an Apollo 9000 System from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) - is among the fastest supercomputers worldwide and the fastest general purpose system for scientific and industrial computing in Europe. Elektrobit's state-of-art product line, EB corbos, is being used within the European Processor Initiative (EPI), a project currently implemented under the first stage of the Framework Partnership Agreement signed by the Consortium with the European Commission (FPA: 800928), whose aim is to design and implement a roadmap for a new collection of low-power European processors for extreme scale computing, high-performance Big Data, and a range of emerging applications. The goal of this project is to deliver a high-performance, low-power processor, implementing vector instructions and specific accelerators with high bandwidth memory access, meeting high security and safety requirements. Smart mirrors have gained popularity in recent years. However, their algorithms are often too complex and too compute-heavy for energy-efficient usage. The LEGaTO SmartMirror, developed by the EU-funded LEGaTO project, tackles this specific challenge by using a modular, energy-optimized, heterogeneous processing platform that results in low energy consumption. On February 14, 2020, the University of Groningen started using a piezo testing ground at the Stationspark in Zuidhorn. Piezo electricity is energy that is generated by vibration. Director of CogniGron Professor Beatriz Noheda and alderman Hielke Westra of the municipality of Westerkwartier revealed a temporary information panel. This panel explains the test set-up for computer technology and is part of the Energy Path that is located in the station area of Zuidhorn. GE Research, the central technology development arm for GE, has been awarded access to the world's #1-ranked supercomputer to discover new ways to optimize the efficiency of jet engines and power generation equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected the GE project among 47 winners in the 15th year of its Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) programme. Each year, approximately 6 billion gallons of fuel are wasted as vehicles wait at stop lights or sit in dense traffic with engines idling, according to US Department of Energy estimates. The least efficient of these vehicles are the large, heavy trucks used for hauling goods - they burn much more fuel than passenger cars consume when not moving. But devising a way for such "gas-guzzlers" to make fewer stops in congested areas should result in fuel savings. Read further...
