Exascale supercomputing

Semiconductor company Tachyum Inc.'s Prodigy Processor AI/HPC reference design will be used in a supercomputer which will be deployed in 2021. This reference design will provide customers, partners, OEMs and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) a proven blueprint for building and deploying ultra-high performance Exascale AI/HPC supercomputers and data centres in 2021. Quantum computing

Quantum computer research will be established at Forschungszentrum Jülich as a national priority. The Helmholtz Quantum Center (HQC) will be a central technology laboratory which will cover the entire range of quantum research - from investigating quantum materials to developing prototypes. The project, which is funded by the Helmholtz Association with almost 50 million euro, has been launched in January 2020. Read further...
Scientists from Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) in Vladivostok, Russia, together with colleagues from FEB RAS, China, Hong Kong, and Australia, manufactured ultra-compact bright sources based on IR-emitting mercury telluride (HgTe) quantum dots (QDs), the future functional elements of quantum computers and advanced sensors. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has appointed Professor Mark Parsons as Director of Research Computing. Professor Parsons, who is Director of the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC) and Associate Dean for e-Research at the University of Edinburgh, brings a deep knowledge of research computing in the UK and Europe to this new role. Prof. Parsons will fulfil the role on secondment from the University of Edinburgh for one day per week. Read further...

The project "Commercialization study of BigDFT for chemistry applications" (BigDFT4CHEM) has won the call for Spin-off Initiatives (SPI) launched by the EXDCI-2 consortium. The aim of BigDFT4CHEM is to study the market and commercialization possibilities of the open source code BigDFT applied to the chemical industry, and to contribute to closing the gap between the scientific "gem" and its commercial application. The project will receive 65.000 euro in funding for a business-oriented assessment and will start its activities in February 2020. Read further...

Applications

An international team has completed the most comprehensive study of whole cancer genomes to date, significantly improving our fundamental understanding of cancer and signposting new directions for its diagnosis and treatment. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has been involved from the initial stages of this project, and has contributed with the analysis of data, with the design of specific computing solutions for cancer genomics, as well as in the answering of specific questions related to with the biology of tumours. Researchers at Seoul National University and Inha University in South Korea developed photo-sensitive artificial nerves that emulated functions of a retina by using 2-dimensional carbon nitride (C3N4) nanodot materials.
