Exascale supercomputing

Simula Research Laboratory has chosen Bright Cluster Manager to manage its multi-architecture, multi-OS high-performance computing (HPC) environment. Simula Research Laboratory AS was established in 2001 and is organized as a limited company owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. Its main objective is to create knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. After an initial planning phase, Simula Research Laboratory established eX³ in 2019 to become the previously missing national resource for research on exascale computing in Norway. Read further...
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility, will deploy the new Cray ClusterStor E1000, the most efficient parallel storage solution, as its newest storage system. The new collaboration supports ALCF's scientific research in areas such as earthquake seismic activity, aerospace turbulence and shock-waves, physical genomics and more. The latest deployment advances storage capacity for ALCF's workloads that require converged modelling, simulation, artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics workloads, in preparation for Aurora, ALCF's forthcoming exascale supercomputer, powered by HPE and Intel, and the first-of-its-kind expected to be delivered in the U.S. in 2021. Read further...
Computational scientists now have the opportunity to apply for the upcoming Argonne Training Programme on Extreme-Scale Computing (ATPESC), to take place from July 26-August 7, 2020. The call for applications for ATPESC is now open through March 2, 2020. Read further...
Taking stock of the progress and laying the foundations for future collaborations. This was the twofold objective of the kick-off meeting of the Leonardo project, that took place at SISSA on 29 and 30 January 2020. Read further...

Quantum computing

Theoretical physicists from Trinity have found a deep link between one of the most striking features of quantum mechanics - quantum entanglement - and thermalisation, which is the process in which something comes into thermal equilibrium with its surroundings. Read further...
"Think what we can do if we teach a quantum computer to do statistical mechanics", posed Michael McGuigan, a computational scientist with the Computational Science Initiative at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Read further...
A liquid-like magnetic state of matter called a quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a rarity, but an experiment followed by a theoretical study at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory has pointed scientists in the right direction to find materials that can host this state. Read further...
Solving complex optimization problems is the focus of a new spin-off from the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. IT pioneer and venture capitalist Hermann Hauser participates in ParityQC GmbH, which was founded at the end of last year. The Tyrolean company wants to set the international standard for quantum optimization. Read further...
The world is moving at full speed, pushing forward an amazing wave of novel and disruptive technologies that will change the way we see, move, behave and even communicate. We are at a point in time where those technologies, eager to emerge, will signify a paradigm shift in how we view our place in this world, opening a whole new realm to our understanding of the human being from the inside and out: how it interacts and connects with its environment and other elements.
