Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago launched a new testbed for quantum communication experiments from Argonne. The Argonne quantum loop consists of a pair of connected 26-mile fiber-optic cables that wind circuitously between Argonne to the Illinois tollway near Bolingbrook, Illinois, and back. At 52 total miles, it is currently among the longest ground-based quantum communication channels in the country. Read further...
A 2017 report of the discovery of a particular kind of Majorana fermion - the chiral Majorana fermion, referred to as the 'angel particle' - is likely a false alarm, according to new research. Majorana fermions are enigmatic particles that act as their own antiparticle and were first hypothesized to exist in 1937. They are of immense interest to physicists because their unique properties could allow them to be used in the construction of a topological quantum computer. Read further...
Technology from ISARA Corporation, a global provider of quantum-safe and crypto-agile security, ensured that the Karma Revero GT demonstration car at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) can send and receive electronic voice data without fear that the information will be hijacked or harvested - even by a quantum-enabled adversary. Most of us are taught in grade school how planets formed: dust particles clump together and over millions of years continue to collide until one is formed. This lengthy and complicated process was recently modelled using a novel approach with the help of the Comet supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on the UC San Diego campus. Think of it as a celestial parlor game: What is the minimum number of satellites needed to see every point on Earth? And how might those satellites stay in orbit and maintain continuous 24/7 coverage while contending with Earth's gravity field, its lumpy mass, the pull of the sun and moon, and pressure from solar radiation? Textbook descriptions of brain cells make neurons look simple: a long spine-like central axon with branching dendrites. Taken individually, these might be easy to identify and map, but in an actual brain, they're more like a knotty pile of octopi, with hundreds of limbs intertwined. This makes understanding how they behave and interact a major challenge for neuroscientists. Read further...
