Quantum computing

Following on from the 6th meeting of its Quantum Scientific Council, Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, is continuing to enrich its quantum development ecosystem, through the creation of a global User Group of the Atos Quantum Learning Machine (QLM), which will be chaired by a representative from French multi-national energy company Total. This announcement follows the commercial success of the QLM, the world's highest-performing quantum programming appliance, allowing for the first time to simulate quantic behaviours. This ecosystem is supported by the Atos' Quantum Scientific Council, which includes universally recognized quantum physicists. It is also further enhanced by partners such as software company Zapata and start-up Xofia. Read further...
D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software, and services, has signed agreements with NEC Corporation, an expert in the integration of IT and network technologies, to drive development of hybrid services that combine the best features of quantum and classical computers, and make it easy to incorporate quantum capabilities into integrated workflows. D-Wave and NEC plan to market and sell D-Wave's Leap quantum cloud service, which includes hybrid tools and services, as well as new hybrid capabilities to be jointly developed. NEC has committed to invest $10 million in D-Wave. The collaboration will take effect upon the closing of NEC's investment, which is subject to certain conditions. Read further...
D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software, and services, announced that Dr. Alan Baratz will assume the role of chief executive officer (CEO), effective January 1, 2020. Alan Baratz joined D-Wave in 2017 and currently serves as the chief product officer and executive vice president of research and development for D-Wave. Intel Labs has unveiled what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind cryogenic control chip - code-named "Horse Ridge" - that will speed up development of full-stack quantum computing systems. Horse Ridge will enable control of multiple quantum bits (qubits) and set a clear path toward scaling larger systems - a major milestone on the path to quantum practicality. Developed together with Intel's research collaborators at QuTech, a partnership between TU Delft and TNO, Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, Horse Ridge is fabricated using Intel's 22nm FinFET technology. In-house fabrication of these control chips at Intel will dramatically accelerate the company's ability to design, test and optimize a commercially viable quantum computer. Read further...

On the 9th of December 2019 TheHague played host to the launch of the headquarters for the world's largest AI research network CLAIRE - Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe. CLAIRE has been established in response to the pressing need for excellence in AI research and innovation that ensures that Europe remains competitive in AI and its applications. With CLAIRE, Europe, the Netherlands and the city of The Hague in particular plan to step up the game in terms of investment in talent, research, technology and innovation in AI, with a focus on AI for good and AI for all. The High-Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart (HLRS) has received certification for environmental management under the ISO 14001 norm and for energy management under the ISO 50001 framework. The achievement is the result of a multi-year effort at HLRS to develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability concept that guides the supercomputing centre's operation and future development. CWI and other Amsterdam-based knowledge institutes have joined forces to invest 1 billion euro in the development of responsible AI technologies. The partners will set up research programmes, attract top scientists and educate students with state-of-the-art knowledge of AI. Lenovo and Intel are collaborating to modernise HPC infrastructure at Austria's most powerful supercomputer - the Vienna Scientific Cluster-4 (VSC-4). Built on Lenovo ThinkSystem servers and 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, VSC-4 supports more than 300 research projects led by scientists from higher education institutions throughout Austria, covering life-enhancing challenges such as meteorology to materials science, quantum chemistry to genetics. Super Micro Computer Inc., a global expert in enterprise computing, storage, networking solutions, and green computing technology, has released its second annual Data Centres and the Environment report based on an industry survey of over 5000 IT professionals. Results demonstrated again this year, the majority of data centre leaders do not fully consider green initiatives for the growing build-out of data centre infrastructures, increasing data centre costs, and impacting the environment. The InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA), a global organisation dedicated to maintaining and furthering the InfiniBand specification, has reported the latest TOP500 List results show that HDR 200Gb/s InfiniBand accelerates 31 percent of new InfiniBand-based systems on the list, including the fastest TOP500 supercomputer built this year. The results also highlight InfiniBand's continued position in the top three supercomputers in the world and acceleration of six of the top 10 systems. Since the TOP500 List release in June 2019, InfiniBand's presence has increased by 12 percent, now accelerating 141 supercomputers on the list. Read further...
SINET is a network utilized by universities and research organisations across Japan. At the launch of its current version, SINET5, in April 2016, ultra-high-speed 100 Gbps lines were constructed between data centres in each prefecture in Japan. In March 2019, its international links with Europe, the United States and Asia were also upgraded to 100 Gbps. At the moment, at least 920 universities and research organisations are connected to the regional data centres, enjoying some of the best communication performance in the world between research sites inside and outside Japan. Four staff members from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign got the chance to spend a week in La Serena, Chile, this summer, including a day and night spent on an Andean summit. The team traveled over 24 hours to Chile to work on the configuration and setup of local servers for the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project and also got to take in the beautiful surroundings of the La Serena area. Scientists are getting better at modelling the complex tangle of physics properties at play in one of the most powerful events in the known universe: the merger of two neutron stars. Neutron stars are the fast-spinning, ultradense husks of larger stars that exploded as supernovae. They measure about 12 miles across, and a single teaspoon of neutron star matter weighs as much as 1125 Golden Gate bridges, or 2735 Empire State buildings. Read further...

At AWS re:Invent 2019, VMware Inc. demonstrated how customers around the world are selecting VMware Cloud on AWS to migrate and modernize their applications. Customers adopting VMware Cloud on AWS include 888 Holdings, AIT Worldwide Logistics, Department of Customer Service NSW, EMPLOYERS, Equinix, Optage, and ZENRIN DataCom, all of which are taking advantage of VMware's consistent Cloud infrastructure and operations to reduce the cost, complexity and risk of moving VMware-based applications to the Cloud.
