At the 75th HPC User Forum in Edinburgh, Scotland, Satoshi Matsuoka, director of RIKEN talked about Fugaku, the next generation supercomputer in Japan. RIKEN is a big national laboratory, such as Max Planck in Germany. It is one of the 15 centres in Japan. There are other centres such as the AI centre, as well as centres for material sciences, biology, brain studies and regenerative medicine but RIKEN is the HPC Center and national flagship Research Center. D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software, and services, has expanded the Leap API into Amazon Braket, a new, fully managed Amazon Web Services (AWS) solution that allows scientists, researchers, and developers to begin experimenting with computers from quantum hardware providers in a single place. The service, announced at AWS re:Invent 2019, gives AWS users live Cloud access to D-Wave's 2000Q quantum processor via the Leap quantum Cloud service API. Customers and developers will be able to leverage D-Wave's processing power in real time to run quantum applications directly from Amazon Braket. This access will extend to forthcoming D-Wave systems, such as the next-generation Advantage, coming in mid-2020. Read further...

DDN, a global expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-Cloud data management, has leaped into the rankings of major all-flash array vendors as tracked by IDC, a global analyst firm, over the first half of 2019. Through organic growth, investment in recent acquisitions and the closing of the transaction with Western Digital for the IntelliFlash business unit, DDN built an all-flash array portfolio which grew at a much larger percentage (78,7%) than rivals such as Dell Technologies, NetApp, Pure Storage and IBM. ColdQuanta's newest Quantum Core atomic system, a core subsystem of Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) next-generation Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL), is part of the payload being delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of NASA's CRS 19 mission. A team of researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Riverside have found a way to produce a long-hypothesized phenomenon - the transfer of energy between silicon and organic, carbon-based molecules - in a breakthrough that has implications for information storage in quantum computing, solar energy conversion and medical imaging. In reality, the opposite is true: a human brain - which today is still more proficient than CPUs at cognitive tasks like pattern recognition - needs only 20 watts of power to complete a task, while a supercomputer requires more than 50.000 times that amount of energy. The most powerful supercomputer to debut on the November 2019 TOP500 ranking of supercomputers, also the most powerful supercomputer in New York State, was unveiled on December 5, 2019 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Center for Computational Innovations (CCI). Part of a collaboration between IBM, Empire State Development (ESD), and NY CREATES, the eight petaflop IBM POWER9-equipped AI supercomputer is configured to help enable users to explore new AI applications and accelerate economic development from New York's smallest startups to its largest enterprises. The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University has launched its Cyber Ready Cloud Innovation Centre (CIC), powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The new CIC will focus on Cloud-based cyber security solutions, enabling students to tackle cyber issues in the real world through innovative Cloud computing approaches and emerging technology. Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company, and Formula One Group have completed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) project to simulate the aerodynamics of cars while racing, carrying out detailed simulations that have resulted in the car design for the 2021 racing season. The CFD project used over 1150 compute cores to run detailed simulations comprising of over 550 million data points that model the impact of one car's aerodynamic wake on another. Using the unmatched scalability of AWS, Formula 1 was able to reduce the average time to run simulations by 70 percent - from 60 hours down to 18. The project ran for six months using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) c5n instances and delivered performance equivalent to that of a supercomputer, for a small fraction of the cost.
