Mark Parsons explained "The UK Exascale Project" at the HPC User Forum in Edinburgh. In the video recording of his presentation you can hear about the development of this project and the current status. Since mid 2018, it was clear that the UK needed an exascale computing strategy. Because of Brexit, it was impossible for the UK to join EuroHPC. So, a strategic case was made to undertake a scoping study to develop an outline business case for the UK government. Read further...

Cray, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, has unveiled its Cray ClusterStor E1000 system, an entirely new parallel storage platform for the Exascale Era. ClusterStor E1000 addresses the explosive growth of data from converged workloads and the need to access that data at unprecedented speed, by offering an optimal balance of storage performance, efficiency and scalability, effectively eliminating job pipeline congestion caused by I/O bottlenecks. Quantum computing

ColdQuanta, Inc., the quantum atomics company, today announced it has been awarded an additional $2.8M across four separate programs from DARPA, NASA, and the U.S. military. These programs will advance the development of ColdQuanta’s cold atom Quantum Core™ technology for quantum positioning (gyroscopes and atomic clocks), quantum sensors (radiofrequency detectors), and quantum communication systems. Following the recent announcement of a $1M award from NASA, these awards put ColdQuanta’s cumulative R&D funding at over $30M. Read further...

At this year's Supercomputing conference (SC19), the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) will once again sponsor some of Germany's brightest collegiate minds, supporting a national student team participating in the prestigious Student Cluster Competition (SCC) which runs November 18–20 at SC19 in Denver, Colorado. Team "deFAUlt", consisting of six undergraduate students representing the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), is one of four European teams entering the student competition. Eni has started the updating work for its new supercomputer system, HPC5, in order to strengthen the existing HPC4, tripling its computing power from 18 to 52 petaflops peak,. Thanks to HPC5, powered by Dell Technologies, Eni's Green Data Center, will become the world's most powerful supercomputer infrastructure in the industrial sphere, with a total peak power of 70 petaflops. The European Processor Initiative (EPI), a project with 27 partners from 10 European countries, with the goal of helping the EU achieve independence in HPC technologies, is approaching the closure of the first year in its three-year cycle. Super Micro Computer Inc., a global expert in enterprise computing, storage, networking solutions, and green computing technology, announced enhanced performance on a broad range of servers, workstations, and motherboards that leverage the new Intel Xeon E-2200 processors. In addition to refreshed four- and six-core processors, Intel has introduced new eight-core processors where the top frequency rate can increase to 5 GHz from 4.5 GHz on specific processors with Turbo Boost, bringing up to a 16% gain in multi-threaded integer operations. Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, has signed a contract with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) to supply a new supercomputing cluster, based on Atos' BullSequana X technology, to the Institute of Interdisciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC). The IFISC is a joint institute of the University of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), and runs scientific research in the framework of complex systems. It is one of the most innovative scientific research centers in Spain. The High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) Initiative, managed by DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), is seeking qualified industry partners to work collaboratively with DOE’s National Laboratories on projects that use high performance computing (HPC) to solve key technical challenges in the areas of manufacturing and mobility.
