At the 75th HPC User Forum in Edinburgh, Tiago Quintino from the European Centre of Medium-Range Weather Forcasts (ECMWF) explained that the NextGenIO project brought better weather forecasts one step closer by demonstrating a new type of storage called NVRAM that sits between computer memory and disk memory and can be used to process the large amounts of data needed in a weather forecast. After rumours had been spreading for weeks, now it's official. Google and collaborators, including Forschungszentrum Jülich, have achieved a milestone in quantum computing called quantum supremacy as the researchers claim in the renowned journalNature. The term marks the moment when a quantum computer, for the first time, outperforms state-of-the-art conventional computers for a specific task. While the Google quantum processor takes about 200 seconds, the world's fastest supercomputers would need approximately 10.000 years to perform an equivalent task. Researchers of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre under the lead of Kristel Michielsen took part in verifying and benchmarking the quantum processor with simulations carried out on the Jülich supercomputer JUWELS. D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software, and services, will house its first Leap quantum Cloud-based system outside of North America at the Forschungszentrum Jülich Supercomputing Center in Jülich, Germany. The system marks the cornerstone of the new Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum computing (JUNIQ) lab designed to offer practically usable quantum computers to researchers in Germany and throughout Europe. Forschungszentrum Jülich and their government and academic customers will access the system via D-Wave's Leap quantum Cloud service. European business customers can also purchase access to the D-Wave Leap service and systems, including the Leap system located at Jülich. Read further...

James Hetherington has been appointed as UK Resarch and Innovation's (UKRI) new Director of e-Infrastructure, to commence at the start of the new year. This is a new executive role, and will see James Hetherington work alongside Mark Thomson, Executive Chair Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), developing and delivering the e-Infrastructure sector of the UKRI Infrastructure Roadmap, leading on strategy for the software, skills, Clouds, data services and supercomputers that underpin computational science and digital scholarship. It organises over 20.000 information items in one big Knowledge Graph. Cray, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, announced at a signing ceremony in London that UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) have awarded Cray a GBP 48 million contract award to expand its high-performance computing capabilities with Cray's next-generation Shasta supercomputer. The new ARCHER2 supercomputer will be the first Shasta system announced in EMEA and the second system worldwide used for academic research. ARCHER2 will be the UK's most powerful supercomputer and will be equipped with the revolutionary Slingshot interconnect, Cray ClusterStor high-performance storage, the Cray Shasta Software platform, and 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors. The High-Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart (HLRS) in Germany has selected a new Cray CS-Stormä GPU-accelerated supercomputer to advance its computing infrastructure in response to user demand for processing-intensive applications like machine learning and deep learning. The new Cray system is tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) and includes the Cray Urika-CS AI and Analytics suite, enabling HLRS to accelerate AI workloads, arm users to address complex computing problems and process more data with higher accuracy of AI models in engineering, automotive, energy, and environmental industries and academia. Tachyum s.r.o., with the company's European headquarters in Bratislava, Slovakia, continues to successfully contribute to Slovakia's reversal from "Brain Drain" to "Brain Gain" with its recent addition of highly qualified full-time engineers and scientists. Applications

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS) have named Geoffrey C. Fox of Indiana University Bloomington as the recipient of the 2019 ACM-IEEE CS Ken Kennedy Award. Fox was cited for foundational contributions to parallel computing methodology, algorithms and software, and data analysis, and their interfaces with broad classes of applications. Scientists have processed 400 gigabytes of data a second as they tested data pipelines for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope. The 2019 Results and Review Workshop once again brought together the community of users of the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) supercomputer to discuss their latest methods and accomplishments. On October 7-8, 2019, a total of 41 user projects were presented, including 26 scientific talks and 20 posters. The event showcased research across a wide range of scientific disciplines, including computational fluid dynamics, reactive flows, climate research, materials science, computer science, chemistry, physics, and biology. Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. has developed new "Content-Aware Computing" technology that can control accuracy while increasing computing speeds. The technology was developed in response to the increasing demand for computing power accompanying the evolution and popularization of AI technologies. Applying this new technology to deep learning tasks promises to accelerate computing speeds by up to ten times, making it easier to utilize AI for an increasing variety of future applications.
