The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory was recently awarded a total of $4.15 million for research in quantum computing and networking as part of the 2019 Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) Quantum Computing and Quantum Network Awards. The awards will fund three multi-year projects in an effort to secure the nation's leadership in the field of quantum information science. Read further...
D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software, and services, has announced that its next-generation quantum system will be named Advantage. Advantage will be available in the Leap quantum Cloud service in mid-2020. Designed to speed the development of commercial quantum applications, the Advantage quantum system will power a new hardware and software platform that will accelerate and ease the delivery of quantum computing applications. Reflecting years of customer feedback, the platform captures users' priorities and business requirements and will deliver significant performance gains and greater solution precision. Dresden will host the world's first supercomputer that simulates the work of the human brain in real time. Saxony's Minister of Science Eva-Maria Stange handed over a corresponding grant of eight million euro to Dresden University of Technology. "We expect the SpiNNcloud project to open the door to research opportunities not yet foreseeable today", stated Minister of State Dr. Pole. "Its effect goes far beyond Saxony and Germany. Cray Inc. has released the findings of its industry report on the State of Enterprise AI Adoption 2019, which reveals that performance, data locality and security are the top considerations for choosing an AI infrastructure. The survey assessed whether organisations and individuals are prepared to run AI effectively and to take advantage of the capabilities it offers. Findings show that over 70% of companies already have AI applications in use or under development, and as the use of AI grows, IT professionals must consider what infrastructure is needed to maximize the value, scale and performance of their AI workloads. Computing performance has steadily increased against the trajectory set by Moore's Law, and networking performance has accelerated at a similar rate. Despite these connected evolutions in network and server technology however, the network stack, starting with the network interface card (NIC) - or the hardware that bridges the network/server boundary - has not kept pace. Today, network interface hardware is hampering data ingest from the network to processing hardware. Additional factors, such as limitations in server memory technologies, memory copying, poor application design, and competition for shared resources, has resulted in network subsystems that are creating a bottleneck within the network stack and are throttling application throughput. A key requirement for future facilities that aim to capture and control on Earth the fusion energy that drives the sun and stars is accurate predictions of the pressure of the plasma - the hot, charged gas that fuels fusion reactions inside doughnut-shaped tokamaks that house the reactions. Central to these predictions is forecasting the pressure that the scrape-off layer, the thin strip of gas at the edge of the plasma, exerts on the divertor - the device that exhausts waste heat from fusion reactions.
