Today the whole world is trying to push supercomputer technology to the exascale level, i.e. a billion billion calculations per second. In Europe, this exascale vision will be made possible with contributions by Consortia funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme of the EU in projects such as ExaNeSt, which built a first 'straw man' prototype, having worked on this since 2016. Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, officially inaugurated its new global High Performance Computing (HPC) Test Lab in Angers. The new 2000 m2 test centre, which has the capacity to host the equivalent of approximately 48 BullSequana supercomputers, provides Atos' HPC customers worldwide with the unique opportunity to thoroughly test their supercomputing equipment under real conditions, to ensure it meets stringent benchmarking criteria, prior to receiving delivery on-premise. MIT and Dartmouth College researchers have demonstrated, for the first time, a tool that detects new characteristics of environmental "noise" that can destroy the fragile quantum state of qubits, the fundamental components of quantum computers. Physicists at Uppsala University in Sweden have identified how to distinguish between true and 'fake' Majorana states in one of the most commonly used experimental set-ups, by means of supercurrent measurements. This theoretical study is a crucial step for advancing the field of topological superconductors and applications of Majorana states for robust quantum computers. IBM has opened the IBM Quantum Computation Center in New York State. The new centre expands the world's largest fleet of quantum computing systems for commercial and research activity that exist beyond the confines of experimental lab environments. Luxembourg is acquiring a supercomputer called "Meluxina" which will be co-financed by European funds and will join the European network of EuroHPC supercomputers. Based on the business plan for the installation of this High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure prepared by the Ministry of Economy and LuxConnect, LuxProvide SA was recently created to provide acquisition, launch and operation of Meluxina. An interdisciplinary team of climate researchers and computational experts has developed an innovative method to study cloud dynamics in unprecedented detail in weather and climate models. The method employs comprehensive three-dimensional cloud simulations to replace the traditional approximations of cloud processes currently used in global climate models. The coupling of these simulations to global models is done with the help of software technology originally developed for astrophysical research. The international climate science community is undertaking an extensive programme of numerical simulations of past and future climates. Its conclusions will contribute significantly to part one of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, which is expected to be published in 2021. The French scientists involved in the work, in particular at the CNRS, the CEA and Météo-France, were the first to submit their contributions, and they have now revealed the broad outlines of their findings. Specifically, their new models predict that warming by 2100 will be more severe than forecast in earlier versions. They are also making progress in describing climate at the regional level. Cerebras Systems, a company dedicated to accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) compute, has signed a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance the massive deep learning experiments being pursued at its laboratories for basic and applied science and medicine with supercomputer-scale AI.
