Researchers from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) have created a device that acts like a synapse in the living brain, storing information and gradually forgetting it when not accessed for a long time. Known as a second-order memristor, the new device is based on hafnium oxide and offers prospects for designing analogue neurocomputers imitating the way a biological brain learns. The construction of the Frontera supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) involved multiple industry partners over the course of several months. Dell EMC delivered fully integrated racks. Mellanox provided the HDR InfiniBand network. Intel provided its 8280 Cascade Lake processors. DataDirect Networks supplied the storage appliances. Innovative cooling systems came from Cooltera and CoolIT to the racks; and Green Revolution Cooling with their immersion cooling system for the graphics processing units. NVIDIA's virtual GPU (vGPU) technology, which has already transformed virtual client computing, now supports server virtualization for AI, deep learning and data science. Applications

IBM designed Summit, the fastest supercomputer on Earth, to run the calculation-intensive models that power modern artificial intelligence (AI). Now the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is about to get a slice. IBM pledged earlier this year to donate an $11,6 million computer cluster to MIT modelled after the architecture of Summit, the supercomputer it built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. The donated cluster is expected to come online this fall when the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing opens its doors, allowing researchers to run more elaborate AI models to tackle a range of problems, from developing a better hearing aid to designing a longer-lived lithium-ion battery. More than 6000 veterans died by suicide in 2016, and from 2005 to 2016, the rate of veteran suicides in the United States increased by more than 25 percent. Suicide prevention is the US Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) highest priority - so much so that in recent years, the VA has started using predictive models and advanced informatics to identify at-risk veterans. One such model, called the medication possession ratio algorithm, creates individualized summaries of veterans' medication patterns, such as which medications a veteran is prescribed and how often those prescriptions are filled. The model helps clinicians pinpoint veterans with inconsistent medication usage patterns - these veterans are known to have a higher risk of attempting suicide in the next month. Read further...

According to a release issued by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), researchers have developed a machine learning approach called transfer learning that lets them model novel materials by learning from data collected about millions of other compounds.
