Focus

We have updated our list with projects under the current European Horizon 2020 research programme. 790 million euro of budget has been allocated in this five year programme. We have found 119 HPC related projects. There is still some budget that has not yet been allocated. So the final figure, next year will be over 800 million euro for over 120 projects. Our list does not yet include EuroHPC funded projects. The first EuroHPC calls are just open, so no EuroHPC funded research project has been approved yet. Read further...

Exascale supercomputing

Cray Inc. has launched an entirely new, open and extensible software platform to address the growing need for supercomputing across government and private industries. As advanced simulation, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation create new, data intensive workloads, the need for performance at scale is growing rapidly. Recognizing the challenges presented by the exascale era, Cray's software fuses supercomputing performance and capability with the modularity, composability and ease-of-use of Cloud computing. The Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have signed contracts with Cray Inc. to build the NNSA's first exascale supercomputer, "El Capitan". El Capitan will have a peak performance of more than 1,5 exaflops (1,5 quintillion calculations per second) and an anticipated delivery in late 2022. Researchers from GW4 Universities Bristol and Cardiff assessed the performance of the GW4 Alliance Isambard supercomputer using an open-source Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) code. The research team consisted of Unai Lopez Novoa, Data Innovation Research Institute; Pablo Ouro Barba, Cardiff School of Engineering; Dr James Price, University of Bristol; and Professor Simon McIntosh Smith, the principal investigator for the Isambard project and a professor of high-performance computing at the University of Bristol. ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, has announced that Milinda Shayamal Fernando of the University of Utah, and Staci Smith of the University of Arizona are the recipients of the 2019 ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships. Milinda Shayamal Fernando is recognized for his work on high performance algorithms for applications in relativity, geosciences and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Staci Smith is recognized for her work developing a novel dynamic re-routing algorithm on fat-tree interconnects. The Fellowships are jointly presented by ACM and the IEEE Computer Society.
