An international team headed up by Alexander Holleitner and Jonathan Finley, physicists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has succeeded in placing light sources in atomically thin material layers with an accuracy of just a few nanometers. The new method allows for a multitude of applications in quantum technologies, from quantum sensors and transistors in smartphones through to new encryption technologies for data transmission. Cray Inc. has issued financial results for its second quarter ended June 30, 2019. All figures are based on U.S. GAAP unless otherwise noted. Revenue for the second quarter of 2019 was $69 million, compared to $120 million in the second quarter of 2018. Net loss for the second quarter of 2019 was $43 million, or $1,03 per diluted share, compared to net loss of $11 million, or $0,27 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2018. Non-GAAP net loss was $31 million, or $0,75 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2019, compared to non-GAAP net loss of $8 million, or $0,20 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2018. While watching the production of porous membranes used for DNA sorting and sequencing, University of Illinois researchers wondered how tiny steplike defects formed during fabrication could be used to improve molecule transport. They found that the defects - formed by overlapping layers of membrane - make a big difference in how molecules move along a membrane surface. Instead of trying to fix these flaws, the team set out to use them to help direct molecules into the membrane pores. Read further...

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has selected two Cray CS500 systems for its High Performance Computing Modernization Programme (HPCMP) annual technology procurement known as TI-18. The Army Research Lab (ARL) and the U.S. Army Engineering and Research Development Center (ERDC) will each deploy a Cray CS500 to help serve the U.S. through accelerated research in science and technology. The two contracts are valued at more than $46 million and the CS500 systems are expected to be delivered to ARL and ERDC in the fourth quarter of 2019. Read further...
The first Cray Shasta supercomputing system for operational weather forecasting and meteorology will be acquired by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The powerful high-performance computing capabilities of the new system, named HPC11, will enable higher fidelity weather forecasts for U.S. Air Force and Army operations worldwide. Japanese researchers were able to rapidly and accurately predict the microstructure of Nickel - Aluminum (Ni-Al) alloys that are commonly used in the design of jet engine turbine parts. Predictions of the microstructure of these alloys have so far been time-consuming and expensive. The findings have the potential to greatly advance the design of materials - made up of a range of different alloys - that are used to make products in several different industry sectors. This may come as a shock, if you're moving fast enough. The shock being shock waves. A balloon's 'pop' is shock waves generated by exploded bits of the balloon moving faster than the speed of sound. Supersonic planes generate a much louder sonic 'boom', also from shock waves. Farther out into the cosmos, a collapsing star generates shock waves from particles racing near the speed of light as the star goes supernova. Scientists are using supercomputers to get a better understanding of turbulent flows that interact with shock waves. This understanding could help develop supersonic and hypersonic aircraft, more efficient engine ignition, as well as probe the mysteries of supernova explosions, star formation, and more.
