Exascale supercomputing

The Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) held its sixth annual interdisciplinary conference in scientific computing and computational science, PASC19, from June 12-14 in Zurich, Switzerland. Taking place at the campus of ETH Zurich, the conference set a new PASC attendance record with 428 scientists, industry representatives and experts present. The trend toward wider diversity in attendees, something that the PASC conference has strived for since its beginning in 2014, continued to grow with PASC19, as nearly 60 percent of attendees traveled from outside of Switzerland to take part in this expansive scientific computing event. Crowd computing

You don't have to be a scientist to contribute to research projects in fields such as biomedicine, physics, astronomy, artificial intelligence, or earth sciences. Using specialized, open-source software from the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing project (BOINC), hundreds of thousands of home and work computers are being used for volunteer computing using consumer devices and organisational resources. For the past 17 years, with funding primarily from the National Science Foundation (NSF), BOINC is now used by 38 projects and more than a half a million computers running these projects around the world. D-Wave Systems Inc., an expert in quantum computing systems, software, and services, has made available D-Wave Hybrid, a simple open-source hybrid workflow platform for building and running quantum-classical hybrid applications. D-Wave Hybrid is part of the Ocean software development kit within D-Wave's Leap quantum Cloud service and is available today for download. The D-Wave hybrid framework provides simplified workflow controls to developers, allowing them to use both classical and quantum systems in parallel, gain insight into system performance, optimize code across systems, and develop quantum hybrid applications more easily. Focus on Europe

Researching the design of new intelligent computing systems inspired by the human brain is the goal of "CoCoUnit: An Energy-Efficient Processing Unit for Cognitive Computing" project, led by Antonio González, a researcher from the Department of Computer Architecture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). He has received an Advanced Grant, the highest award granted by the European Research Council to investigators pursuing groundbreaking high-risk projects. Read further...
The IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre, located at the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava, succeeded in a pan-European competition for hosting the "EuroHPC petascale system", to be acquired within the implementation of EuroHPC Joint Technology Initiative. The results of the call for hosting and co-funding of the HPC system were announced on the occasion of the 7th EuroHPC Joint Undertaking Government Board Meeting. Read further...
In the Commit2Data round for Big Data & Health, four public-private research projects have been awarded grants for research into the early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The Top Sector Life Sciences & Health, NWO, ZonMW, the Heart Foundation and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport have jointly made a total of 6,58 million euro available for these projects. On June 16 2019, OpenACC.org announced that Jack Wells of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will serve as its newly elected vice president. Jack Wells is currently the director of science for ORNL's National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS), home of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility. The Cray XK7 Titan supercomputer operated by the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) at the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will be decommissioned on August 1, 2019 and disassembled for recycling. Performing up to 27 quadrillion calculations per second, Titan ranked as one of the world's top 10 fastest supercomputers from its debut as No. 1 in 2012 until June 2019. For the ninth consecutive time, Japan's K computer has taken the top spot on the Graph500 ranking, a benchmark which, in comparison to the better known TOP500 ranking, gauges the ability of supercomputers on data-intensive loads rather than simple speed, with the goal of improving computing involving complex data problems in "Big Data" areas such as cybersecurity, medical informatics, data enrichment, social networks, symbolic networks, and modelling neuronal circuits in the brain. TOP500

The InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA), a global organisation dedicated to maintaining and furthering the InfiniBand specification, shared the latest TOP500 list results that report InfiniBand accelerates the top three supercomputers in the world and six of the top 10 systems. Additionally, HDR 200Gb/s InfiniBand, the fastest end to end interconnect technology currently available, makes its debut on the list in four systems - including the fifth highest ranking supercomputer, the Frontera at Texas Advanced Computing Center.
