Focus

EuroHPC has as its ambition to make Europe a major player in the world in supercomputing. In the TOP500 released last week in Frankfurt, Europe still plays a very modest role. This should change next year when the pre-exascale supercomputers and petascale systems for which funding was awarded earlier this month, come online by the end of next year. But where do we start from in Europe? To look at this we analysed the TOP500 lists of the past five years. Read further...
Most of the matter in the universe is dark matter: some 80%. We know dark matter exists, but that is about all. We do not know what dark matter is made of, or how it came into existence. Something similar is happening with the TOP500. Slowly but steadily, more and more of the list is turned into a kind of dark matter: systems we know exist - we even have the specifications but we do not know who owns them, where they are located or what they are used for. Exascale supercomputing

The VECMA project has launched its 1st year Validation, Verification, Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) Software Toolkit release, available as of today. This is the first major release of three which are planned over the three years of the VECMA project. The Toolkit release contains various functionalities, including unit and functional tests, as well as documentation and tutorials. Read further...

Quantum computing

Within the greater European project of the Quantum Flagship, spearheaded by Mikel Sanz - researcher of the QUTIS Group of the UPV/EHU Physical Chemistry Department - an experiment has been conducted in collaboration with German and Japanese researchers who have managed to develop a protocol for preparing a remote quantum state while conducting communication in the microwave regime, "which is the frequency at which all quantum computers operate. This is the first time the possibility of doing so in this range has been examined, which may bring about a revolution in the next few years in the field of secure quantum communication and quantum microwave radars", lead researcher in this project Mikel Sanz observed. Mark Pecen, chief operating officer of ISARA Corp., has been re-elected chairman of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute's (ETSI) Quantum-safe Cryptography Working Group focused on setting standards for the implementation and deployment of quantum-safe cryptography to protect data and critical systems from a quantum computer enabled attack. A team at the University of Tsukuba studied a novel process for creating coherent lattice waves inside silicon crystals using ultrashort laser pulses. Using theoretical calculations combined with experimental results that were obtained at the University of Pittsburgh, they were able to show that coherent vibrational signals could be maintained inside the samples. This research may lead to quantum computers based on existing silicon devices that can rapidly perform tasks out of the reach of even the fastest supercomputers now available. Read further...

The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) has officially published a new policy document titled "National Nodes – Getting organised; how far are we?" The aim is to present a representative picture of the European e-Infrastructure landscape at its current state and to provide, on the basis of this analysis, a number of recommendations on how to efficiently implement the e-Infrastructure Commons in the form of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). DDN, a global expert in AI, HPC and Multicloud Data Management, has captured the number-one spot in the IO500 10-node benchmark, announced on June 19, 2019 by the Virtual Institute for IO at ISC in Frankfurt, Germany. In addition to the top spot, DDN ranked in three of the top five system results. DDN was also a part of a notable submission working with Google to introduce the first IO500 submission run in public Cloud with EXAScaler. Additionally, DDN was recognized as the leading storage supplier to HPC in Intersect360's HPC User Site Census. Read further...

In mid-July, Mississippi State University (MSU) will begin operating a newly installed high-performance computer (HPC) called Orion and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support NOAA research and development in environmental, weather and climate modelling, and autonomous vehicle design and operation. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will invest $32 million over the next four years to accelerate the design of new materials through use of supercomputers. Seven projects will be supported, three led by teams at DOE National Laboratories and four by Universities. The teams are led by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as well as the University of Illinois, the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Texas and the University of Southern California. While intense magnetic fields are naturally generated by neutron stars, researchers have been striving to achieve similar results for many years. UC San Diego mechanical and aerospace engineering graduate student Tao Wang recently demonstrated how an extremely strong magnetic field, similar to that on the surface of a neutron star, can be not only generated but also detected using an x-ray laser inside a solid material. The National Science Agenda has awarded a 5 million euro grant to CORTEX - the Center for Optimal, Real-Time Machine Studies of the Explosive Universe. The CORTEX consortium of 12 partners from academia, industry and society will make self-learning machines faster, to figure out how massive cosmic explosions work, and to innovate wider applications. AMAX, an expert in integrated supply chain manufacturing and orchestration, has made available the BrainMax series of servers designed to solve complex Big Data analytics, machine/deep learning, and artificial intelligence workloads. The systems debuted at CVPR 2019 in Long Beach, California. The BrainMax series feature the latest generation of NVIDIA RTX GPU accelerator cards based on the Turing architecture, Tensor Cores and real-time rendering cores for advanced deep learning and graphics rendering applications.
